One other thing I was wondering - if I might - on Hainault depot's wash road there are these screens which display a number. The number seems to flicker around a lot, although I seem to recall one at the Hainault end usually shows 22. Recently they've been looking pretty unloved and the numbers are difficult to read these days as bulbs seem to have gone, but I was wondering if anybody could tell me what they're for?

Depending on which ones you mean, they will either likely be the outside temperature, or speed indicators to indicate to drivers their speed when passing through the wash. Any more than a certain speed and the wash shuts down I believe. From your description sounds like the former.

Hi North End, thanks for the reply. They're sort of difficult to describe, they're black screens, which display yellow-ish numbers, very easily visible from passing trains between Hainault and Grange Hill. They look a bit like a digital clock face. I say the one at the Hainault end shows 22, but it could be 2.2. There's another one at the Grange Hill end which varies quite substantially. That's for trains going from the Hainault end to the Grange Hill end, I think there are also two for the other direction.
I think (and I really should be sure to point out that I'm not a T/Op, so clarification is obviously welcome) that the wash road has codes for some of its length, I'm sure I've seen a "code begins" sign as I've gone by. Otherwise, wouldn't trains run through in Restricted Manual (with all its attendant speed limits) anyway?

Might it be a theatre indicator? Used to show what route is set from the signal. I'm not sure though, as I've never been past Stratford

A little off-topic, but can I just briefly recommend it. When you get out of the pipe on the Central line you see some wonderful sights. The Epping road is just beautiful (particularly east of Loughton) and so is the whole of the Hainault loop really.

North end is correct. They are speed indicators. The max speed allowed through the wash is 8kph. Any more than that the brushes will retract. They have them at West Ruislip depot too.

Yes, indeed, and I would say Chigwell for its quaintness (although it is long overdue a new coat of paint and some general love.)

Hobbayne is correct, they are speed indicators but they've not worked for ages. I've not seen them on the wash at Ruislip depot but then its been a while since I went in there.
The East End of the Line is good for wildlife, between Debden and Theydon Bois there's loads of rabbits around the cable runs, I once saw a Green Woodpecker on the Loop just past Roding Valley and I think I saw a Muntjac up towards Epping.

Sorry I was wrong, they dont have them at Ruislip depot, I was thinking of Cockfosters depot on the Picc! Old age is creeping up on me!

That's alright, again, thanks for correcting it, it's nice to know I must say, I was a little confused when you said Ruislip, because I hadn't noticed them before, but I assumed it was just because of the quality of the view
