. . . . didn't realise the District went to Hounslow West. Rich Until 1964. District to South Acton (withdrawn 1959) also shown.

I wonder how many passengers were naive to think by reading the back of the map that they could travel directly on the Northern City Line(Highbury Branch) to Cockfosters.

While we are at it, here is the train describer at St James's Park (Westbound) on 17th April 1963

While we are at it, here is the train describer at St James's Park (Westbound) on 17th April 1963 Very nice photo! Incidentally the non-stopping plates were black-on-yellow, the 'not stopping at' being yellow-on-black. The space beside 'EALING' has Harrow and Uxbridge covered over. Quaintly, NORTHFIELDS has (West Ealing) underneath!

I have a very vague recollection that one referred to "If no Circle line train shown, take the first train and change at earls Court." The second I think referred to the days when the District went thru' to Hounslow West, and certain trains ran fast from Hammersmith to Acton Town. Unless there is a book just detailing "Station Indicators" maybe someone has a clearer photo in their collection?

The notices underneath gave times that the "Not stopping at Gloucester Road & South Kensington" service ran, and also to change at Earls Court for Wimbledon if "no through train" was shown. I am sure there were no "fasts" on the District between Hammersmith and Acton Town. Yes, the "metal signs for the non-stoppers" were black on yellow, not black on white

Wouldn't Gloucester Rd or South Kensington be a more logical place to change for a Circle than Earls Court? The Circle never served Earls Court.

Well I think surely it's advising you to go to Earl's Court and take an Edgware Road district line train "if no Circle line shown" presumably there were times when such trains were few and far between and it was just better to carry on to Earl's Court and head up towards High St.

Excellent picture. Time for a photo-gallery on Train Describers.
(Is there a book on the subject?)

I think we should maybe have a discussion, too, about whether these sort of describers were actually better than the "smallprint" ones we are lumbered with today.
I would think many visually-impaired passengers might find that larger print more helpful, for a start? Especially, if they could be adapted to show in brackets how many minutes before first & 2nd trains arrive.
I believe there's one station on the District Line that still has these on one platform-might be Earl's Court?

Earls Court still has these old things, but I doubt that we would want them back en masse! Granted the current ones are a bit small, but that brings the benefit of lower maintenance costs. However where the new ones win is when it comes to flexibility, the ability to display all the possible destinations with a couple of keystrokes - here, you would only have that flexibility if the describer was the size of the platform! Perhaps a "best of both worlds" would be to have a larger dot matrix TD, with the regular destinations along the side and then the number of minutes across the edge, reading left to right, next train to later, I think a simple diagram is in order: Basing it on St James Park WB as in the photo: Destination 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th +-----------------+-------------------- |Ealing Broadway | 1 |Wimbledon | 3 |Richmond | 7 |Circle Line | 0 8 +-----------------+--------------------- or something similar to that, but to be honest, the current system works fine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! (unless you are granted a large budget and told to do so! )Also, it might be worth a mod splitting any discussion about TDs to a new one at your discretion

Yep, happy if the mods want to pull this onto a new thread.
So will await that before continuing the discussion.
