What do you think of the new NTIs- widely used on Northern line (e.g Euston). Where the destination of the next train is loudly proclaimed as well as the next station that train will call at. Also who is the voice behind the announcement?

I think their clarity is excellent though they need more flexibility. Eg I heard at Westminster "The next train is to Circle line".

They're useful, especially when the platforms are packed and you can't see the dot matrix indicators. But is the "next station" bit strictly necessary. It might be useful at places like Camden Town or turnham green for example, but at any through station in the middle of a straight stretch (eg goodge street) the next station announcement are just irritating. All of the trains going in the same direction all have the same next stop. Its completely redundant!

Phil Sayer's wife Elinor Hamilton does the automatic voices for Tubelines platforms. She can get quite chatty at Old Street with a lot of supplemental announcements at times. I rarely hear het at Camden Town during the peak though.

The good thing is her voice is easy to hear over the background noise, unlike Anne at c2c stations and Euston. Still don't beat Phil Sayer though!

For me, Phil has always been the warm and welcoming voice of UK rail stations. Elinor is pretty clear and audible over the rumble of adjacent trains and such like. Also that system is also a lot better than what they have in use at Kings Cross St' Pancras.
