What is the purpose of the buildings on top of the entrance to the tunnel portal at Canning Town? As far as I'm aware, this is the only place on top of tunnels that have them.

The buildings are also larger than they need to be I think, the architecture is deliberately big and bold to fit in with the Thames Barrier and industrial landscape of the area.

As stated, fans and floodgates, not an escape shaft as such but there is track access door if memory serves, I had to do inspections there when I was the group H&S Rep but it's a long time ago.

It's all of the above. There are actually two buildings, the larger building contains the River Lea floodgates (and associated plant) and ventilation fans, the smaller building is an Intervention Point.
