I saw this device attached to the running rail in the eastbound central line platform at Bank on Tuesday. What is it? It's not brilliantly clear from the photos, but it does extend over the top of the running rail - I'd estimate it would be about 5mm above the railhead. (click either image for a larger version)

First it's not on the Running Rail, looks like its on the check rail. As the Bank has sharp curves there has always been an issue with noise and running rail wear.
It's a new type of kit to put grease on the inside of the running rail, the can like item holds the grease, the bit on the top is pushed down by the wheel flange and it pumps out the grease. The can of grease has the date 11 Feb on it.

Yep. Flange greaser, I reckon. Bank is a bit squeaky.

Much smaller type than that found on the Met.

On the Victoria Line's former 1967 trains, they has train mounted Stick-Lube cartridges, which dispensed lubrication onto the track in a similar fashion, I wonder do the new 2009 trains have that feature now?

I have had reports of low adhesion on the DTS while approaching Bank, now I know why.

It also explains the customer comments about the smell of 'gas' in the vicinity. I was working at my station just after it was 1st used (a couple of years ago, I think) and quite a few people mentioned the smell in the tunnel at Bank!

In case someone is interested, here is a link. I believe that, for this particular application, the XP1099 grease is used.

I believe they do not exist anymore due to possible wheel wear if the lube stick 'ran out'. Something with metal on metal contact.

We always used to get customers coming up to us at Bank saying there was a weird gas smell between Liverpool Street and Bank and trying to explain it was caused by the grease that lubricates the track was met with blank looks. The loud screeching as trains came into the platform is also the reason why on the Westbound we were only allowed to do half an hour of SATS each per shift.

They were fitted to 09 Stock, not sure whether they still are or not. It was a very similar stick lube to what was on the 67 stock.
