A bit more history has disappeared: the old siding at Rayners Lane (long since disconnected) has been removed, as part of the track replacement work last weekend.
The track behind the westbound platform is still there as far as I could see today.

Gosh, I can just about remember seeing an engineering works train in that siding. The memory makes me feel old!!! When was it disconnected to the main line - late 70's?

Do you mean the track that went into the yard on the down road West of the station, the points lead was removed many years ago.

One of the first colour transparencies I took with a new camera was of a pannier tank in the Rayners Lane siding click here - no automatic exposure in those days and I hadn't bought a light meter by then either.

AFAIK, the points were removed in the mid-90s.

I sometimes park my car at Rayners Lane, but don't see many pannier tanks, Ford Cortinas or Austin Atlantics (I think that's what it is!) there these days. Amazing to see a shot of a train actually using in the siding. Sadly, photographs of the 'main line' aren't even possible now, because new brackets for cabling obscure most of the view. It was possible to get a decent shot of the train leaving the station with the signalbox in the background. I don't think the link will work, but if you look for the thumbnail of 5113 you'll see the view which has gone; mainlinesouth.smugmug.com/Trains/London-Underground/17834982_GCFkbt#!i=1869048299&k=QMp7jf7&lb=1&s=XL Quite a shame to hear the old sidings have gone, another little piece of history.

If it was disconnected from the main line what was the point of it being removed?

If it was disconnected from the main line what was the point of it being removed? To use the site as a work base for the track replace work and other engineering works that have been taking place.
