It looks as though after many years the link between Great Northern and Thameslink is finally under construction unless all that construction work is for something else. Its a wonder why the tunnel has been built with no tracks for years.
Or am I nearly a year too late on this?

well until all the works around London bridge are completed there won't be enough services entering the core from the South to service both branches... the tunnel works were done early to save disruption once hs lines opened...

Just over a year to go until the tunnels are fully commissioned (March 2015) it is planned that empty stock workings will use the line at first, avoiding the current 'long way round' for stock running from Cricklewood to Hornsey for maintenance exams (this currently takes a long route via West and South London!)

If the tunnel link had not been done as the same time as the St Pancras / Channel tunnel link then it would have been vastly more expensive and disruptive to come back and build it separately. For once someone used some foresight and got a very important bit of infrastructure built in the most cost effective way. I understand works to provide tracks and install the necessary junctions and systems have been going on for a while. It's a shame we have to wait until 2018/19 to use it but I am looking forward to seeing Thameslink at Finsbury Park.
