Heads up for you all....
We are currently running trains through Barking sidings in passenger service, eastbound only, bewteen Barking and Upney.
This is also expected to occur all day tomorrow and is due to the possession for engineering works encompassing the eastbound platform at Barking in error.

Interesting! How many shunt signals does that move involve, 5?

4 I would have thought! 1 from the w/b platform wrong road 1 at the inlet 1 at the end of the road passed through (21 - 25 only) 1 at the outlet.

Are any special precautions necessary to enable this to happen? For example, points being secured.

aspect is correct - 4 shunts
This is possible thanks to rule changes made in September 2011, although there has been a sneaky change whereby it can be done relatively routinely now rather in special circumstances only when it first came about.
Rule book 5, section 12 covers it - all we need these days is the signallers authourity; no scotching and clipping required.
PLEASE NOTE:
The train service will now use the eastbound platform at Barking as planned tomorrow - the possession limits will be corrected overnight and thus you will no longer be able to bash the sidings.

I came through the sidings last night on my way home. Unexpected and exciting stuff for us ordinary folk.
Talking of sidings, what's happening at Upminster/Cranham. There seems to be a lot of work going on. Is it for the new trains?

Yes - we've had 8 new sidings installed and the sheds are currently being modified ready for S stock (with a slight reduction in roads as a result).
