Yesterday I viewed all the off peak pairs (and a few inter peak stablers) of D stock in my quest to get my last four required sets for haulage. I got three out of four so it was worth a lot of standing in the cold! Train numbers and formations shown below with the odd numbered set always at the Upminster end of the train. Note that some sets swapped around at lunch time. I didn't see train 20 until 1400 by which time the sets off train 47 had swapped on to it.

Apart from the 83 stock, the D stock are the first trains I can remember from when they were new. Seems odd that they will start to be withdrawn in a few months.

Are the D stock made up of 2 3 car units back to back? And what is the number scheme used on the D stock?

Yes, the D stock are 2 3 car units coupled together. There are also some double ended units which can be coupled up to normal single ended cars. This page explains it well

The linked page explains it comprehensively, but briefly: Single ended units are formed DM-T-NDM , Double ended units are formed DM-T-DM DMs are numbered 7xxx, NDMs 8xxx, Trailers 17xxx
In normal use, a six car train is formed by two single-ended units back to back, or with a single ended unit coupled to a double ended unit. (two double ended units are slightly too long to opreate in passenger service and, because of the two empty cabs, have slightly less passenger space.
Numbering: A (west) end units: 7xxx-17xxx-8xxx where xxx is between 000 and 128 (even numbers)
D (east) end units 7xxx-17xxx-8xxx where xxx is between 001 and 129 (odd numbers)
double ended units 75xx-175xx-75xy where xx is an even number between 00 and 38 and xy is the next odd number (e.g 7538-17538-7539)

I spent some of yesterday evening peak (22/01/14) on the District looking for my last 4 units. Recorded all of the ones seen (almost all in service) and their train numbers as follows:
001: 7060 + 7015 002: 7538 + 7119 003: 7518 + 7127 004: 7086 + 7520 005: 7525 + 7044 006: 7012 + 7035 007: 7036 + 7097 010: 7066 + 7047 011: 7054 + 7129 012: Not seen 013: Not seen 014: Not seen 015: 7043 + 7094 016: 7507 + 7092 017: 7065 + 7078 020: 7115 + 7016 021: 7075 + 7126 022: 7101 + 7024 023: 7007 + 7004 024: 7025 + 7002 030: 7528 + 7017 031: 7031 + 7050 032: 7108 + 7514 033: 7040 + 7071 034: 7008 + 7013 035: 7106 + 7093 036: 7058 + 7121 037: 7090 + 7027 040: 7128 + 7009 041: Not seen 042: 7023 + 7080 043: 7533 + 7104 044: 7125 + 7100 045: 7003 + 7014 046: 7059 + 7020 047: 7011 + 7064 050: 7030 + 7005 051: 7096 + 7019 052: 7046 + 7069 053: 7006 + 7107 055: 7088 + 7049 056: 7110 + 7033 057: 7120 + 7057 060: Not seen 061: Not seen 062: Not seen 063: 7039 + 7098 064: 7079 + 7124 065: 7111 + 7112 066: 7535 + 7074 067: 7018 + 7029 101: 7091 + 7032 102: 7037 + 7082 103: 7089 + 7010 104: 7051 + 7501 105: 7042 + 7510 106: 7022 + 7061 107: 7028 + 7055 110: 7102 + 7081 111: 7512 + 7087 112: 7072 + 7067 120: 7095 + 7026 121: 7522 + 7109 122: 7114 + 7103 123: 7118 + 7099 124: Not seen 125: Not seen 126: 7053 + 7509
I did also notice 7000+7531 heading East but didn't see the train number, and also 7034 on the back of a train heading East, so that's 2 of the 9 not seen.
Managed to see 3 of the 4 units wanted, still not seen 7076.

Silly question time while on the subject of formations, and the above lists.
I bet this has been asked before but its not coming up in a search for me.
Can you run in normal service a D stock trains formed of two double ended units ?
I'm not sure why anyone would actually want to do that operationally, but technically can it be done, that is without mods, by simply coupling two together ? Or can't you couple DM to DM ?

Two double-ended units can run together as a 6-car train although they are longer than single-ended units and could overhang the platform end barriers, their use has been discouraged for some time. DM-T-DM+DM-T-DM 109726mm DM-T-UNDM+DM-T-DM 109473mm -253 DM-T-UNDM+UNDM-T-DM 109220mm -506
When introduced all trains were formed this way as the double-end units were delivered first. Empty movements to the ELL were also 6-car double-end units.
