Following a day and night of heavy rain the Esplanade at Ryde was severely flooded on Christmas Eve. The water level virtually reached the height of the tunnel roof and the flooding almost reached the REsplanade station. The line south of the tunnel was also under water alongside Monkton Mead Brook the adjacent Simeon Recreation Ground being completely under water. The Royal Esplanade Hotel had its basement flooded the water being pumped away by the fire brigade across the road and onto the railway no doubt adding to the water levels!
By today the waters had receeded but the track leading into Ryde tunnel was still submered.
There was no flooding at Ryde St. John's Road depot so as far as I am aware no issues with rolling stock. Three 38 Stock units were stabled outside the depot yesterday and I expect a further two inside the depot which means that one unit is outstable somewhere, probably Shanklin. Likely to be a few days before services are resumed.
If I can set up a flicker account and download photos will do so in next 24 hours or so.
Happy Christmas to All.

An update to my earlier report. In addition to the flooding in Ryde tunnel a further 20 areas of flooed damage have occurred in the Ryde area and further south there is also a landslip. It is estimated that it will take three weeks to restore the train service. In the meanwhile taxis are being used to connect with ferries at Ryde Pier Head and there is an hourly bus service from the Esplanade to Shanklin calling at all stations, or at least a location close to the station.

I hope that the flooding does not give them the excuse to permanently shut the Island Line.

The following has appeared on the Isle of Wight County Press website today
Operation to restore storm damaged rail network By a County Press reporter - Thursday, January 2, 2014
A MAJOR operation is underway on the Isle of Wight to repair the storm-damaged rail network.
Island Line said two of its trains would be out of action for months after being submerged in the recent floods, while 600 tonnes of ballast was needed to shore up areas where landslides had left the track unsupported.
Engineers need to replace ballast and sleepers across three miles of track, following severe flooding at Ryde over the festive period, the company said. Fifty metres of signal cabling must also be replaced.
A spokesman said: "Around 600 tonnes of ballast, the material used to provide stability to the track, will be delivered from today (Thursday).
"Crews will begin work with the material which weighs the equivalent of more than 450 average cars on Monday to get the line back up and running.
"The two crews will begin work from each end of the three mile stretch of track that needs repairing. One crew will start from Ryde tunnel, working towards Smallbrook Junction and the other will work from the other side, working back to the Smallbrook Junction.
"Repairs are also needed to the station platform at Smallbrook Junction."
Replacement bus and taxi services remain in place for around 17 hours a day and Southern Vectis buses on routes 2 and 3 are also accepting rail ticket holders between Ryde and Shanklin.

An update to the current position on Island Line. A lot of bagged ballast is now located in the yard at Ryde St. Johns Road behind the signalbox. Some was being craned onto flat wagons today to be taken to the many locations where the line has been undermined by floodwater.
Units 007 and 008 are outstabled coupled together towards the southern end of the line. At Ryde depot unit 009 is stabled on the higher level road closest to the station. The non operational unit 002 is as usual stabled on the centre depot road with an unidentified unit behind, either 004 or 006. The remaining set is inside the depot. I would imagine that it is these two latter mentioned units which have incurred flood damage.
The Steam Railway has also not remained unscathed as a tree was blown down onto the last train of the day on 23rd December smashing windows on one of the carriages. Unfortunately there were a couple of relatively minor injuries to passengers.
The adjacent road at Moreton Common which parallels the railway north of Sandown has also been closed due to flooding from time to time with traffic light controlling a single lane of traffic when the water receeds.
And more rain is forecast!!!

It is currently predicted, subject to no further adverse weather, that train services between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin will resume on 20th January. This will be four weeks to the day since the pre Christmas flooding damage.

Will all the units of the1938 stock be returned to service by Monday ? Quote from the text: " Repairs at the flood damaged depot at Ryde St Johns have also completed and further work is ongoing to repair the two units that received flood damage. Although repairs are expected to take a couple of months, they shouldn't have an impact on the Island Line service"

Units 008 and 007 travelled from the location just north of Shanklin, where they have been since 23rd December, to Ryde St Johns at lunch time today. They were uncoupled by the signalbox. Unit 008 then proceeded to the Pier Head and thence south to Shanklin. Further test runs then operated and as mentioned above normal service resumes tomorrow. I believe unit 009 is the other servicable unit but will confirm.

Just to confirm unit 009 is the third set available for traffic. It was in operation today along with 008.

Some further flooding damage to Island Line today. Heavy rain from Friday night caused an embankment slip to the north of Sandown this morning around 09h00. After inspection it was decided that there was no risk to passing trains although apparently some trees had to be removed which had ended up too close to the running line. Service was resumed around 16h30.

According to BBC teletext travel news the service is suspended, this time due to a landslip near Shanklin

Isn't it about time that the line was replaced by light rail with street running through Ryde to eliminate the tunnel problems.

Gales last Tuesday caused displacement of planking on Ryde Pier. Services terminated at Ryde Esplanade with taxis providin a link along the pier. The landslide which occurred at Sandown last weekend was then deemed safe but following further heavy rain on Friday deteriorated forcing complete service suspension.

Bit late to the party I know, but its now fully operational as I've just had a round trip on it.
There's a p-way slack near Shanklin, presumably the landslide, units 7 and 9 ran the service with 8 parked outside the depot along with the Christmas Tree.
