Up until the December timetable revisions, all H&C trains (apart from those entering service from Barking sidings) were scheduled to reverse in the bay platform. However, during the off peak, they are now scheduled to reverse via the sidings, which as a result required one extra train in service. in addition, on Sundays, the District line Barking reverses are now scheduled to use the bay platform. Surely it would have been better to keep the previous arrangements, which involved less variation in the use of platforms and thus simpler to understand from the passengers' point of view? The only reason that I can think of for doing this is to increase layovers at Barking, and thus aid with service recovery.

The problem we were having is that the Aldgate area is generally in first come first serve mode and thus eastbound H&C's were running early & out of turn......then upon arrival at Barking they would shut us down awaiting access to the bay road.
By running 'em through the main they only hurt us whilst being tipped out.
I dunno if the change has made any difference though as I've not really been out on the railway much since the timetable change.....

One possible advantage of the new system is that all westbound trains depart from the same platform.

One possible advantage of the new system is that all westbound trains depart from the same platform. But they don't! Most of the peak H&C trains will still depart from the bay, as will a few in the late evening. Not to mention some of the District line trains on Sunday.

Having re-read the earlier post that makes it much more confusing. You are correct!

Slight correction to my earlier post. The Sunday Barking reversers on the District line will still do so via the sidings. The bay reversers apply to trains after 22:00 only. On Sundays, the H&C trains will use the bay platform.
I even managed to confuse myself!
