Just had a look through twitter as i was bored and noticed that TFL travelalerts put out a message last night on twitter that the district line was part suspended Earls Court - Wimbledon and the last train to wimbledon would not run due to the train been vandalised between ERD - ECT then a few minutes later they put another tweet out saying "operational staff were on the track investigating a fault"
what happened on friday night seems very unusual for TFL to send messages out like that

The problems were at the East end of the line. The signal main went down between Bromley By Bow and Dag East. I was the driver of the last eastbound train and arrived at Stepney Green at just before 01.00 as booked, I was held there all night and didn't leave until 06.10. The service was formally abandoned at just after 03.00 and taxis were provided for the passengers still on the train. Staff were on the track to secure all the points in the affected area. I arrived in Upminster Depot at 07.05 instead of the booked 01.40.

What if you had made arrangements outside of work - would they send down a night relief driver?

A defective 600v cable was the issue

. I arrived in Upminster Depot at 07.05 instead of the booked 01.40. So in that scenario of booking off over 5 hours late, quite apart from the not inconsiderable overtime what happens to your next rostered duty (in general terms, I quite understand if you can't be specific about this particular circumstance)?.

In that particular instance Jim was a night turn so from an overtime/next duty perspective there was no issue. Hopefully the fact that Jim was stranded all night will be recognised by management in some form or other.
Had it been a straight late turn, the answer is simple - all LU operational staff must have a minimum 12 hours rest between duties - so Jim would book on at 1905 the next evening.

The discussion regarding rest breaks has been separated from this thread and can now be found here.
