I have in the back of my mind a query. I seem to recollect seeing somewhere a reference to a condensing STEAM locomotive that would fit inside a TUBE tunnel. I can find nothing about it now. Did such a thing ever exist or am I dreaming?

Yes they did. I'm sure they did on the GNR (Great Northern Railway) which used to include some parts of the Northern Line I'll get some pics Highgate Station in July 1954 Highgate station just after closure And the ultimate pic is located at this website - pages.britishlibrary.net/overground/heights/ Scroll down three quarters of the page to Box S04 Hope that helps ;D

The LER also had a tube gauge steam loco. Built by Kerr - Stuart & Co in 1922. Photo dated 28 May 1931 at Lillie Bridge when it's number was L33 although not carrying the number. It was scrapped about 1947. Photo and details from, "The Later Years of Metropolitan Steam", by HC Casserley, 1979, Bradford Barton. (Click on the image for a larger version.)

The lines they ran on were built well before the Northern Line was extended to East Finchley to join them.
