I'm doing some research into the Central London Railway station buildings designed by Harry Bell Measures. Does anybody know what the colour scheme of the tiling in the booking halls was? The only photos I can find from this period are of course in black and white: Notting Hill Gate - www.ltmcollection.org/images/webmax/96/9863496.jpgSt. Paul's - www.ltmcollection.org/images/webmax/26/9864326.jpgIt looks like white tiling and then a darker colour from the waist down, does anybody know what colour it was? Many thanks

I don't have a copy to look in myself, but the book Tiles of the Unexpected by Doug Rose is not unlikely to have the answer.

I got the book for my birthday so I'll have a look when I get home. It's a great book though - not cheap but the amount of time and effort put in, along with fold-out insets of the complete length of tiles for many stations makes it definitely worth the money.

Agreed, Doug Rose's book looks like a very fine publication, shame it's not available to purchase anywhere.
Thanks for your kind offer londonstuff.

@studhead - try bookfinder.com - this links to many second hand booksellers and to a variety of Amazon sites. At a quick glance, it looks as if there are some secondhand copies around in good condition.

Sadly, Douglas Rose's excellent publication (purchased online from well-known supplier! for £22.98) doesn't cover the CLR stations. I do remember Shepherd's Bush (Central) had green tiles below waist level.

Studhead, the original tile colours were a chocolate brown and cream but like the Leslie Green tiling patterns, the brown had shading of darker browns towards the edge of one side of the tile, whereas the cream had no additional shading.
