With the up and coming Extended Open Weekend at The LTM Depot Acton, and the impending start of some conservation work on the DMBSO S61 resident there, I was wondering when the Network South East livery was applied to this stock? Also was it undertaken in-situ underground in the maintenance facilities at Waterloo , or was it removed via the Armstrong lift, and undertaken elsewhere to another Depot be repainted, from, what I would imagine, would have been BR blue.

The refurbishment of the Class 487 stock and the stations (including the NSE flashes on the platform edges at the door positions) was sponsored by Allied Lyons and announced in February 1987. Sorry, I don't know where they were painted, but the cramped location and risk of paint fumes suggests they may have been taken away.

9 motor cars were done at Waterloo, one at Eastleigh. 10 trailers were done at Waterloo, three at Eastleigh.
It was sometimes (usually?) done over two weekends and the train (or cars) being done one weekend could be seen during the week running in undercoat white.

norbitonflyer As an amusing side comment, I noticed that the NSE "racing slugs" on the platform edges had been very thoroughly sand- blasted away over the weekend of the transfer to LU ownership...

Not all if them, I think they are still there at Bank. Albeit with a yellow line painted through the centre of them.

Their shadows survived! [It was the attempt to rewrite history so soon that was the interesting bit.]

For quite a while there was only one motor car in NSE livery; that one had fluorescent lights fitted. The inverters emitted a high frequency whine which I found very irritating whenever I drove that car.
Complaints via the union eventually brought an ensemble from Derby Research with test equipment. They discovered a 15khz whine which most other driver couldn't hear. I could. so that car was always formed at the Waterloo end so the drivers didn't have to endure the noise, those with good hearing that is!!
Also, the same car mysteriously appeared one day with INTO CITY on the side. Now I couldn't think WHO put that on there...it was removed by the following day!

That car was 57. Returned to Waterloo (high level) ex-Eastleigh 24.10.86, lifted down to line 27.10.86, re-entered service 17.11.86.

Many thanks for all the replies, it has certainly enhanced my knowledge for the stock. Incidentialy I have been given the impression from a comment on You Tube in reply to a video posted on the 1940 Waterloo & City Line Stock, that the interiors were refurbished at Swindon Works, of all places, during 1985. I don't know if anyone could confirm this?

Yes I can confirm that Swindon was involved. They did motor car 51 (14/11/84 to 11/2/86), trailers 73 (29/9/86 to 11/4/87), 78 (24/10/85 to 22/10/86), 81 (2/10/84 to 1/10/85) and 86 (2/10/84 to 22/10/85).
