Just looking through wtt 256 for the met main from July 1975 and a couple of interesting things struck me 1- still got booked reversers in Liverpool street bay road- when was that decommissioned ? 2- an empty stock working 232 runs on the met to willesden green then crosses over to the bakerloo and then on to neasden depot- when was that crossover removed? 3- the LMR were running parcels trains- 4B18 2028 ex marylebone. It shunted at amersham from the nb to pfm 3 then back again to go on to Aylesbury and a 4B26 2007 ex Aylesbury - when was the last parcels train over LT metals ? 3- off peak it was an hourly amersham service- imagine the complaints today if that was still the case 4- there were planned cancellations in the timetable I take it that was the height of the chronic staff shortages? Interesting to reflect on how different the met is today

IIRC the Liverpool Street bay was still in use in the early 1980s.

I well remember many northbound trips on the Met Line on Sundays using the crossover at West Hampstead. Some Met used a crossover just south of Finchley Rd station to use the northbound Bakerloo platform. A power failure at Lots Road standed a 4-car A60 in that platform for a while one Sunday am. If only I had taken a photo of that! Can anyone recall when that crossover at Finchley Road was removed, did it come out before the one at West Hampstead. It was an impressive sound goind over these crossovers with the welded rail surface. If I recall there was access from the sidings at Willesden Green to the northbound B'Loo and Met Lines. Can anyone confirm this just in case my memory is poor on this one.

That crossover was used during the last CO/CP rail tour I think so 1981 at the earliest.

I was on that tour and have to admit cannot remember that bit. I do recall it being a hot day though!

Just looking through wtt 256 for the met main from July 1975 and a couple of interesting things struck me 1- still got booked reversers in Liverpool street bay road- when was that decommissioned ? Re your first query, Metropolitan Line (No.2 Section) trains last reversed in Liverpool Street Bay on Friday 23rd January 1981. Since WTT279 had not been in operation for very long, rather than issue a replacement WTT, a TTN was issued consisting of gummed pages to stick over the affected pages in WTT279. In the main, this was for those pages containing the peak hour extended service from Baker Street to the City. Interestingly, the revised timetable was constructed such that Liverpool Street reversers still formed their original NB services but obviously now originating from Aldgate. As a consequence, there were very few train number adjustments that had to be made. Metropolitan Line (No.1) Section WTT 278 also received the gummed replacement pages treatment. I imagine the route into the Bay was secured out of use on the Saturday night.

I left the UK in June 1975--and I remember the Liverpool St reversers in the peak (ex-Amersham and ex-Chesham), hourly services to Amersham off peak, and staff shortages. Were there still C stocks drafted from the Circle/H&C service to run up the main Met. And what was the set number of the train that arrived at Uxbridge around 0930 and stabled in the sidings until the start of the evening peak? I am thinking it was 46 but I could be wrong.

The Liverpool Street reversers were left over from the days of the Aylesbury service with Met Electrics. Shame the Liverpool bay was removed it would provide some element of flexibility.

I thought it was a 30min service to Amersham off peak,60min late evening.Trains 1 & 2 used to uncouple and there were 4 4 car trains operating the service trains 1,61,2 & 62.That was according to WTT in operation in 74/75.

I'm sure I read during the strikes in the 70s LTE cancelled one of the Amersham trains. Thankfully this was followed by a LM service to Marylebone so it was less of a problem.

On Sundays during the 1970s Amersham had 2 Mets per hour--a fast one and a local one(robbed from the Watford branch) to compensate for BR not operating between Amersham & Marylebone on Sundays.

During my brief period on the Met, (August73-Jan 74) we had one Amersham an hour off-peak. Some units split at AM, and if I remember correctly, some at RK! There was also uncoupling at Watford and Uxbridge.
Early and late journeys made all sorts of odd moves using Met/Bakerloo crossovers. I've got a copy of the hand-written WTT somewhere at home!
I must admit I was surprised to learn of the vast increase in Amersham services over the years, a huge difference to the 1tph of my days, when all Amershams ran Finchley Rd-HotH, Moor Park and all to AM! It was a wonderful experience to be on the back of an A stock heading north mid-afternoon with a van full of newspapers and seeing if the driver (sorry motorman) could get 70 through Wembley Park! 70+ down Neasden towards Willesden Green was common in those days.

From 12/10/64 the LT Amersham service was reduced to hourly with one 8-car uncoupling at Amersham. The second train per hour was the LMR Aylesbury service, from which date stopped at Rickmansworth and Moor Park off-peaks. This was the same in 1975. Uxbridge trains uncoupled there and Watford trains uncoupled at Watford.
From 21/1/77 the Amersham trains uncoupled at Rickmansworth.

Following a brief visit to the Liverpool Street Met platforms earlier today I began to realise why the bay platform was inappropriate for a high density metro service. I've always lamented (from afar) anything that reduces the complexity of LUL but having seen the situation, and having realised that being an enthusiast doesn't often help run an operational railway, I now understand why this bay road was removed. It's in the way of stuff!!! Rich

IIRC there was a rather frequent service between Amersham and London immediately after electrification?

I remember the Met Electrics running into L Street bay and the loco headshunt..Going on a Twin Rover and the T stock from Baker street, plus the wonderful F stock on the East London line. IIRC the bay line was still in situ at Kings Cross, but out of use for passengers, although i am sure i did see some stock stabled there back in 1959/60.
