Having been somewhat inspired by the new record set in the standard tube challenge, I was thinking of perhaps doing a mini challenge, just for fun as I don't have the time (or athleticism) for the full thing.
Probably just zone one, or maybe zones one and two.
But having had a think about it there seem to be so many ways of arranging the rules - even if it is just a personal thing not involved in record setting.
Things such as:
Do you traverse all the track in the zone or just the track between the outer stations for each line?
Do you traverse shared track just once or once on each line that uses it?
Do you alight at each station passed or is it enough just to sit?
Does anyone know if such a mini challenge has already been done? (I know about the "pubs on the Circle" and "Monopoly" ones but I'm thinking specifically about zone one and not exiting each station.) If so, where can I find the rules?
Also, would it be safe to use an oyster for this or would it be safer to get a paper travelcard?

Zone 1 only www.tubeforum.co.uk/zone_1.html(also mentions: the "bottle" (Circle line and stations bounded by it) all line (must travel on each line, but only need to go one stop on each) Alphabet: visit any tube station beginning with "A", then one beginning with "B", etc. (Omitting "J" and ending wih "W" for obvious reasons) The Rules mentioned there for Bottle, Zone 1 and Alphabet are, I understand, the same as the full challenge - each call at a station must involved either arriving, or departing, (or both - i.e changing or passing through) on an Underground train that actually calls there: no need to get out: no need to cover all tracks). I understand "All lines" simply requires travel on one train of each line, even when two or more lines share tracks. Unless you are doing the All Line Challange (which, now that the ELL is not part of the Underground, can easily be done in under an hour), it's definitely not safe to use an Oyster unless think you can complete the challenge in the maximum time allowed for a single journey - within Zone 1 that's 90 minutes. But you can make up your own challenge!

Thanks.
That gives me an idea of the time involved and perhaps a target to aim at.

One that we wondered about doing last year was an all-transport circuit, starting and finishing at the same location while travelling at least one stop on all public transport in London - SSR, deep tube, DLR, river boat, cable car, London Overground, mainline rail, tram and bus. I think we decided that Boris bikes were impractical for a group event and that taxis would be too expensive! Crossrail would need to be incorporated into this as well when it opens.

That sounds like a good one and a lot more adventurous than mine. Something else that I must do at some point is to travel the whole of each line. Not on the same day, just do them all eventually. Strangely, considering the number of years I've been using the underground, the only line I've actually completely traversed is the Victoria line, and that was not on one trip. Just a few stations on the Central and District to do but I might do a series of days doing each line in one continuous go - albeit with some fiddling around to get branches done. You could keep yourself amused for weeks!

Any easy one that I wonder if anyone has attempted is what is the quickest time it would take to complete the LOO i.e. London Overground Orbit? (I also wonder if anyone has ever invented that acronym, if not I claim credit )

The timetable suggests Clapham Junction to Canonbury is 44 minutes one way and 48 minutes the other, suggesting a 92 minute circuit, plus connection time. (Canonbury chosen to avoid complications caused by recovery time at High & I or CJ.) Some departures from Canonbury on the two routes are scheduled to be simultaneous, or just one minute)
here's Vicky Pipe's account of a race on opening day, which achieved 105 minutes clockwise and 114 anticlockwise
