It seems that @geofftech has managed to get himself into the record books for: "Fastest time to travel to all London Underground Stations" having done Chalfont & Latimer to Heathrow Terminal 5 in 16 hours 20 minutes and 27 seconds. You may remember that he was filmed trying to beat the record during one episode of "The Tube" (the ITV version) and he also did one with Absolute Radio's Breakfast Show co-host, this one being his 25th attempt. Many congratulations Geoff!

Well done: Intrigued by the start at C&L, as presumably you had to pass through it again later. Is there an early morning bus between Chesham and Amersham, or was that a long run? (I assume The Rules insist that the total running time has to include the first leg of the itinerary, rather than starting the clock at "Doors Open" even if you subsequently visit the start point of that leg? does the same apply at the end? If you arrive at your last station on foot, does the clock stop at Doors Close there, or only when you arrive at the next station (even though you have already been there)

Well done Geoff, the last one was scuppered by Olympia. It's the record you've been after for a while now, so well pleased for you.

evenin' all! Can't comment at all on the route i'm afraid at all! top secret & all that... :-) But at the fifteenth time of asking over the last three years we finally had a service day that didn't collapse on us. Actually, the Picc was suspended for about 45 minutes, but it recovered just as we got to it ... and it didn't mess us up. Finally! Did it, yeah...

Congratulations.
Have you sufficiently detailed records of your trip(s) to enable you to work out how long you would have taken to cover the network as it existed when this challenge was first undertaken?
(Obviously odd sections such as the Epping - Ongar section are problematic.)

(Obviously odd sections such as the Epping - Ongar section are problematic.) An interesting point, especially as Epping to Ongar was, at various periods, peak hours only, and thus the whole route would have needed to be planned to take account of that. Was Watford Junction part of challenge when the Bakerloo ran there? I suppose that it would have been a bus connection between there and Watford Met.

Big well done to Geoff and the team. Like the above post I can't see the tube 25 review.

Undoubtedly - I can't find it now but I recall a mention that the history of the challenge goes back far enough for Aylesbury to have been required - although perhaps Brill wold have been too much to ask for! Guiness "re-sets" the challenge every time a new line opens or closes - fro example the transfer of the East London Line to the Overground, or the opening of Terminal 5 Good luck finding a bus at Watford Met - running across Cassiobury Park would probably be more reliable.

In 1959 Railway Magazine reported 'Underground Covered in a Day', which only covered electrified lines, i.e. not beyond Rickmansworth on the Met. It was 263 stations, 315 miles in 19 1/4 hours (from Earl's Court at 4.53 am to Great Portland St at 12.8 am), and claimed as a record.
I think non-all day, every day services have always been part of the challenge!
The problem with Brill (and Vernay Junction) was the very infrequent services (single digit tpd!) that far out - but against that there weren't then all the new works extensions to do.
From memory the 'Guiness Rules' count from leaving (doors close) at first station to arriving (doors open) at last - which led to problem when entrant's route concluded with a departure from their last station (Heathrow T4 IIRC - reached by other means)

Many years ago I managed 233 in one day (Saturday including engineering works) and visited over a hundred more than once! All for comic relief! 19,5 hours, started at cockfoaters, ended at turnpike lane. It was fun, and I nodded off momentarily on the old 67s on the Vic!

Pair break Tube marathon record 24 September 2013
Eight minutes shaved off finish time thanks to good service
The record for visiting all 270 London Underground stations in the quickest-possible time has been broken by eight minutes.
Geoff Marshall and Anthony Smith completed their epic journey in 16 hours, 20 minutes and 27 seconds.
It is the second time Mr Marshall has held the record, after a total of 25 attempts.
Guinness World Records confirmed that the pair had beaten the previous record of 16 hours, 29 minutes and 13 seconds, held by Andy James and Steve Wilson from May 2011.
The pair, who finished at Heathrow Terminal 5 Tube station, said they beat their previous times thanks to a good service on the Tube network that day.

"The pair, who finished at Heathrow Terminal 5 Tube station, said they beat their previous times thanks to a good service on the Tube network that day." Now we know how to define "A good service on all lines"... All you need then is a piece of fancy software to do the trip for you.

I expect a software algorithm to calculate the fastest route for a tube challenge would be a significant complex computational problem, even more so than most route finders as there are 270 potential start and end points, and it would need to know the time between all two points by train, bus and on foot, and the timetables of trains and buses at all times of the day.
