Last Thursday I noticed extra trains going to Stratford International and couldn't work out why until I noticed that in the other direction these trains were going to London City Airport shown as 'City Airport' on the platform displays, does anyone know why this was? I haven't seen them since, perhaps a one off for an event at the Airport or in Silvertown or maybe it was a practice run for the possibility of a permanent service? During off peak times Stratford International trains go to Beckton and I don't think they're enough trains to also run to Woolwich Arsenal so I suppose LCA would be a good compromise if they were to do this.

The only significant traffic objectives on that branch are City Airport and Woolwich Arsenal. If there are enough trains to run a partial service I'd have thought that City Airport to Canary Wharf would be a more in-demand service. Does the Stratford Intl branch need more trains?
Personally I'd like evening and weekend trains Woolwich to Stratford. Given the recent propensity to run Woolwich to Bank services as two cars on Sundays the units should be available.

Trains couldn't run Canary Wharf to City Airport as platforms 3/4 are only available for about 2 minutes at a time plus they may clash with other services at Poplar not to mention that trains are perfectly spaced apart Canning Town to Shadwell so for another service from City Airport to be slotted in they won't be spaced very well City Airport to Canning Town.

Possibly related this this, I passed through Canning Town during the evening peak today. While waiting for a Jubilee Line train a DLR arrived into the northbound low level platform with a destination of "West Ham". Having just arrived on a Woolwich to Bank service I can say it definitely didn't originate at Woolwich as a train for Stratford International arrived moments before we departed. It is possible it originated at City Airport, but it seems more likely that it came from the Beckton branch. Was there anything on at ExCeL today?

Definitely something on at ExCeL yesterday, not sure what but I remember the next train indicators at West Ham displaying a scrolling message about people with certain passes only alighting at Custom House and the rest at Prince Regent.

Whilst we are on this, why do the Stratford trains switch branches during the peaks (admittedly I haven't been on it since the Olympics last year so corct me if I'm wrong)

Officially it is because the Woolwich branch has a demand profile with significantly higher usage during the peaks than the off-peaks, while the Beckton Branch has a much flatter profile with higher usage during the middle of the day but less pronounced peaks.

At least a weekend service should be provided.

I'd be surprised if Westfield had differentially affected either branch to a significant extent, rather both would see a fairly equal increase in demand to Stratford.
Living at the end of the Woolwich branch I would love off-peak trains to Stratford (and when I lived on the Beckton branch I wanted peak ones too), but I don't think there are enough trains for an all day everyday service to both branches; and I'd rather have a reliable service at the times already provided than no service. It is after all just one change.
