This opened in December 1946 before the extension to Hainault and Epping. However, looking at the layout of Stratford, there seems to be no place where a reversing sidings or points to reverse trains back west could have been. The EB line emerges west of Stratford and drops back in tunnel just east of it, and the westbound platform is not even close to the portals so how did they reverse trains E to W before they went through to Leyton?

There was temporary crossover east of the tunnel mouths approaching Leyton. Trains ran empty from Stratford to a point just short of Leyton Station, known as Drapers Field, before reversing through the crossover to Stratford station. See www.harsig.org/PDF/CentralLineEasternExtensions.pdf for details

Ah! That would make sense. Thanks for posting that. The old goods yard west of Leyton has now gone and been replaced by a motorway since I was last on the Central Line

Used to be a motorman shunter at Hainault in the 60s & 70s called Charlie Pratt,he was a driver on the main line when the extension opened, said after shutting down he had to run to get to the west end cab as the brakes didn't hold on for very long on the standard stock.

This reversal procedure was the scene of the accident on 5 December 1946 linkI hadn't realised, until today, that there were two separate serious collisions here, in similar circumstances. Less than ten years apart, too.
