Before I retired there was a suggestion that the District & Piccadilly Lines swap branches with District running to Rayners Lane & Piccadilly to Ealing Broadway, this was supposed to happen with the advent of S stock on the District.Has this idea now been dropped?

The latest rumour and its just a rumour that the piccadilly line will only serve the heathrow branch and the district will go to both ealing broadway and rayners lane. But there is also talk of the 73 stock being fitted with the software and equipment to run the cityflo bombardier system. If thats the case then they will still run to rayners lane

Surely there isn't enough capacity on the District to give all of Wimbledon/Richmond/Ealing/Rayners Lane a reasonable frequency of service?

I'm sure I have read this proposal before whereby the District serves Rayners Lane / Uxbridge and the Piccadilly Ealing Bdwy plus of course Heathrow. If it is to happen it needs planning now as there would not be sufficient S Stock to cover the longer distances and higher interval service to Rrayners Lane. If services are to continue onwards to Uxbridge this would result in a mix of S7 and S8 operations on the branch no doubt providing some confusion to passengers.
A possible knock on effect would be a slight reduction in services to Richmond and Wimbledon. I'm not sure what the present tph is on the Rayners Lane Branch at present but it must be higher than that provided by the District to Ealing.
Benefits would be the ability to send more trains to Heathrow and relieve pressure on the Piccadilly and 73 Stock but require additional S7 stock. Stations beyond North Ealing would have a slower all stations service through to Hammersmith and beyond. Have there been any passenger surveys on the Rayners Lane branch to find out where most passengers head?

I think the confusion of S7s and S8s is a heckuva lot better than the mixed platform step ups/downs onto trains.

S7 can't serve Uxbridge due to height restrictions, apparently they will cruise under at slow speed, they risk becoming open top at operation speed....

Are S7's taller than S8's then?

S7 can of course get to Uxbridge via Harrow on the Hill, but I assume you mean via South Harrow. Our illustrious founder nobly conducted the experiment to prove that D stock can make the trip, and certainly all previous breeds of District Line types up to K stock regularly used the line. Presumably any modifications to the loading gauge since then are not impossible to reverse?

From memory of discussions about Dave's trip, the issue is that because there is no need to maintain surface stock clearances, things like ballast have built up without consideration of surface stock. So even if the trains do fit, the line isn't maintained to those dimensions and so there is no documentation to prove that they fit. Modern insurance and risk assessments, etc. really don't like "in theory" and "well there is no reason why not"..

I think I remember talk of a road bridge (over the tracks), that had been rebuilt, but at a lower height, allowing only tube stock to pass under.

A Stock has fitted recently though when 5112 was transferred to Acton last year via Rayners Lane and Sudbury Town.

A Stock has fitted recently though when 5112 was transferred to Acton last year via Rayners Lane and Sudbury Town. My understanding was that surface stock is allowed, but not at normal line speed - the dynamic envelope is smaller at low speeds (trains sway about less)

I'm not sure what the present tph is on the Rayners Lane Branch at present but it must be higher than that provided by the District to Ealing. Rayners Lane service is every 10 min, with half the trains continuing on to Uxbridge. I think the Ealing By service is similar. The swap would not be popular with current Picc passengers, due to the slower, stopping service between Acton Town and Hammersmith.

What height difference is there between S7 and S8 ? -- Nick S7 can, of course, serve Uxbridge via West Harrow (as illustrated by the occasional visits of S7+1s in normal passenger use), but this discussion is about resuming the District Line service to Uxbridge (last operated about 80 years ago I think). This would require Ditsrict Line S7s to use the South Harrow line which curently only sees 1973 tube stock in passenger service. SSL stock can use the line but only in non-passenger use and with caution at certain overhead structures as clearances may have eroded slightly in the past eight decades.

In recent months I have seen Sarah Siddons bracketed by battery locos running from Rayners Lane to Acton also a C stock travelling from Acton to Northwood reversing at Rayners Lane before being hauled off for scrap picture here. So there can't be any restrictions between Rayners Lane and Ealing Common.

The restrictions mentioned above do not peevprevent any of the moves in the last two posts.
