Last night I was at Tottenham Court Road en route to Stratford. The first train on the describer was an "Epping", the second a "Special". I got the first train and reached Stratford where I changed for a Shenfield train.
The "Special" train reached Stratford before a Shenfield train arrived. It seems that in this case "Special" means "Not in service".
Is "Special" normally used in that way on the Central line?

A "Special" is either not in service or an engineering train.

At one time "Special" was used when picking up a school group at Bethnal Green and running non stop to fairlop, I think this was a once a week run, Thursdays if memory serves. The train was then stabled at Hainault.

Not sure what this trip was for, as WB departed Fairlop at 11.42 depositing children at Bethnal Green and Mile End around 12.05. Opposite direction departed Bethnal Green at 13.34, picking up at Mile End, then non stop to Fairlop arriving about 14.00. Perhaps it became weekly later on?

I never had a special train as a schoolchild on an outing. Kids these days.

You get a special train when you go to Hogwarts.

I never had a train! Going to school in rural North Yorkshire and then rural Somerset though coaches were just far more practical.

Well from middle and upper schools we walked to Cheddar Gorge several times of course, and I think we once had a trip to Axbrdige where we walked, which is about 2 miles away.
Beyond that I'm glad we didn't, particularly as I went to primary school in a small village that was just under 10 miles away from anywhere with anything to see!

I believe pupils of Merchant Taylors School in Moor Park still get a biennial special to Barbican.

Showing my age. In around 1951, back in the days of steam, we had a school outing to Windsor in a special from Gidea Park.

The trains to Fairlop were used to transport children from ILEA schools that had no sports fields to the Oakfield Playing Field, next door to what is now the Redbridge Sports Centre (IG6 3HD). Oakfield is now under threat of redevelopment by Redbridge Council and I would be interested to hear from users of the site who can recount its history. Please use PM if you prefer.

That makes sense, but aren't the timings back to front then? If kids returned from Fairlop at 11.42, how did they get there? (unless I am missing something?)

My recollection of this is that we ran in service to Liverpool St (at the end of the am peak), tipped out, empty to Bethnal Green/Mile End and non stop to Fairlop. Cannot remember if the train was ex Ealing Broadway or White City.

my WTT 27 shows the eastbound trip as train 20 ex Ealing Broadway, in service to Liverpool St 1331, then empty to Bethnal Green, entrain children there and Mile End, then non-stop to Fairlop. I guess the children must have had a sleepover, looking at the timings....
