Did the proposed central line western terminus ever get as far as being designed in detail? I would be interested to know any details such as the proposed station design and track plans.

Nothing as far as I'm aware, other than a little preparatory work on the 'country' side of West Ruislip station. I have never seen track/signal plans, but in saying that I never expected to see track/signal plans for the aborted Northern Line extensions. So, you can never say never, but (personally) unlikely IMHO.
Having thought about it a little more, there must have been some plans because West Ruislip signal cabin was to control Denham if I recall correctly?

Supposedly it was the creation of the green belt that put paid to the line going any further though I expect cost played a part. Harefield would be fairly straightforward to reach but crossing the canal and river to Denham would have been costly. Then there would have been the issue that the existing Denham station is high up on an embankment supported by steel piles down to ground level. A couple of years ago the down platform was demolished as the embankment was slipping away and you could see the bottom of the building from below. Perhaps the LT station could have been on a lower level as it was to be the end of the line.

I'm with reg. on this one; though I will comment that is seems very odd that nothing has come floating to the surface about Denham. Given the level of planning that I'm aware of for the Northern Heights and associated paraphernalia and that WB TDs for Denham could be set up (together with indications in some cabins and on some platforms) and the planning I've seen for other unbuilt termini I'm a bit more optimistic than reg. but whatever is out there, it is well hidden. I know the planned levels of traffic that would have gone to Denham, and I suspect that all there would be is a two-platform affair with one pair of scissors. West Ruislip operating Denham is an interesting question - on opening there were 4 levers at the 'right' (i.e. left) end of the frame spare, but the other spares don't fit into the pattern quite so readily: - 1 - 4 spare, 5 - 8 in use as EB signals, so 1 - 4 likely as EB signals too
- 10 - 11 spare, 12 - 14 in use as 'station area' crossovers, so 10 - 11 likely for western end crossovers
- 16 - 19 WB signals in station area, 20 - 23 spare so likely to be used for WB signals towards Denham
- 24 - 26 in use as EB discs, so spares 29 - 31 likely for WB discs
- well: the suggested functions of the blocks 16/19 incl. and 29/31 incl. may have been the other way round
- there were quite a few route setting functions spare, but at the 'wrong' (i.e. right) end of the frame
Based on that, I don't think Denham would have been controlled from CS at all until the telephone key type route setting came in about 10 years later. I also have a hunch that Denham would have been code 'CW' or 'CV' - CT and CU would have been 'strategic spares' for Uxbridge High St and Denham East/South Junction.

Very interesting. I wonder how they would have dealt with the Uxb High St situation. Although passenger traffic ceased in 1939 there was an oil depot on the branch and some sidings in use until about 1964 in believe. Also the RAF base at West Ruislip still had sidings in use in the 40's.

they could have solved the Uxbridge high st problem by running there instead of to Denham. the no: of oil depot trains (probably not many per day) could be fitted in at slack hours (as on the eastern central line. This would have saved all the imbecilic postings about Central to Uxbridge lateley!! mind you,as Axlfshd said this forum has deteriorated very much of late with piles of dross such as "why can I only get wifi behind the third seat on the up platform at blogsville " It would be great to do away with all the juvenile postings a la msn trending style and get back to serious (or mostly" discussion about what this forum was origionlly about.
