Here is a tip for anyone visiting Hong Kong.
They employ a similar product called Octopus Card, which works in a similar fashion to London's Oyster card.
The card itself normally has a shelf life of approximately three years before expiry, unless it has a negative value at the end of your holidays there, where it can be re-activated on your next visit to Hong Kong, by making a Top-up at any Hong Kong MTR Underground station before use.
You are allowed to have a negative value on the card (the curent amount is shown on the Hong Kong MTR websites), and I put this to the test by digging out an old Octopus card from 2008, with a small negative balance on it, and re-activated it on a recent return visit Hong Kong, half a decade later - It worked!.
