This evening I was waiting for a train to Upminster around 9.10 pm having transferred from the Goblin.
The Next Train indicator showed Upminster in 6 minutes followed by a Terminated here in 8.
I turned and watched an S7 arrive in the bay platform, turned back and the next train indicator showed Next Train terminates here. They then announced a C2C was arriving at platform 4 so I climbed the stairs and got to the platform to see that the indicator now said that the next train on the District was to Upminster, and it was arriving in the platform, so I got that as it is easier for me.
I am sure it did the same a week ago.
I am not really of an age to rush up and down stairs. What is going wrong?

The indicators at Barking and in fact on a lot of the District Line seem to be incorrect and constantly correcting themselves. The ones at West Ham only shows a train when it's 2 minutes away.
At Barking I often see 'Check front of train' or the more common 'District Line'.

Most indicators on the District Line only showed the next train after it left the last point it could be reversed. EG: after leaving say Whitechapel it would indicate at Stepney Green, Mile End, Bow Road, Bromley By Bow. West Ham would indicate after it left Bromley by Bow. Upton Park and East Ham after it left Plaistow. As for Barking should be when it leaves East Ham but the signaller can change the train and put it into the bay, the sidings so that indicator could easily be wrong. This is how it used to work, cannot say now but it sounds very similar.

I dare say it still works in a similar way. Realistically though, what's on the front of the train is the best guide, sadly it does not help with arrival time information

This is how it used to work, cannot say now but it sounds very similar. The Barking indicators extract their information from Trackernet, but this doesn't continuously track trains between Plaistow and East Ham (or Dagenham East and Upney)so attempts to reconcile train radio details with which train is which and where it is going. This is a bit hit and miss and the system updates its self when its logic tells it which train is most likely which from the info it is receiving. It isn't brilliant and a train with a radio not logged in properly (or logged out early anticipating a crew change at Barking)completely throw it as do lots of trains in the blind area and trains where the destination is changed or where the destination TD feed has received the wrong info from Whitechapel box. The Barking e/b indicator will ignore trains expected to reverse via the bay but will show (as teminating) those expected to go via the sidings. The expectation depends upon the code it left Whitechapel with. All the other station indicators up that end of the line work in the way suggested by revupminster.

That is understandable, but, speaking as a rather older passenger, the new "Next Train" indicator is a waste of money. It certainly doesn't help and in some ways makes the matter worse.
I can read the front of the train as well as the next one, but working out if, from the Goblin platform I can nip (walk reasonably fast for my age) up and down the stairs or via the underpass/passageway and get a C2C, or if I even miss the Upminster District line train while doing the move has been made worse by the "improvement" of the indicator.
I realise those who need their back patting for being innovative can gain house points by the "improvement" of the indicator, but for passengers I feel it is a small step backwards.
Thinking about it having read the previous posts, if a train is shown as 6 minutes away, then if the screen changes the train really will arrive in around 6 minutes from then and is likely to reappear on the indicator as it gets nearer.
I still don't think the indicator is much of a help.
