Apologies if this has been mentioned before anywhere, but I was just wondering, why did they refurbish the D Stock so heavily when they're going to be replaced by S7 Stock in the near future?
Also, as they have been so heavily refurbished, why not keep them to run with the S7 Stock or to be used as backup? I bet if you asked your average passenger they'd think the refurbished D Stock were new trains!

It has been discussed before certainly. The project was first conceived in the late '90s when the D Stock were looking very tired, still with wooden floors and a very dated '70s interior of black, orange, brown and yellow. The only destination equipment being a torn manual blind above the front cab.
Several issues with water ingress around the windows were causing electrical problems. The first trial unit was dealt with in 1999, with hope that the fleet would be finished much earlier than subsequently occurred. Unfortunately a funding shortage delayed the refurbishment of the other units.
Despite your thoughts, the project was scaled-back from that proposed with little done in the cab (new drivers desks were promised), the interior draft screens weren't touched and the polished stainless steel panelling abandoned.

I remember being told that there was only minimal mechanical work done on these trains, although there wasn't much call for it as they were the most reliable at the time...

i'd imagine the mechanical work was along the lines of a good service / replacing worn air pipes etc rather than full ground up refurb. the emphasis on customer side was greater and frankly necessary. tbh they are pretty reliable trains, also drive quite nicely (for the most part!)
