I remember my mum taking me to see the afternoon coal train with a steam loco passing Leytonstone eastbound in about 1959
I have only ever seen one picture showing a DMU running through woodford in the late 60's by then DMU's took over the early BR service
If anyone has any pics of the early BR trains on the eastern Central line I would love to see them

With all this talk of steam on the Central Line, albeit out on the new NE extensions, I would like to point out that until 1923 one could have found steam on the original Central London Railway section from Wood Lane to Liverpool Street as evidenced by the pictures below. The first is from Railway Magazine (1903), v. 12, p. 181, and the latter is reproduced in John Glover’s 9th edition of London’s Underground (1999), p. 23 where he states that they ran from purchase in 1899 to disposal in 1923 and were fitted with condensing gear for running in tunnels after passenger hours. Note the conventional and tube stock buffing gear.

The timetable entry for the "Steam Train" was to get a loco off shed at 30A and on to Loughton Yard where it would be stabled while operating the Epping-Ongar Shuttle. The stops were primarily to pick up signalmen and other crew but it was timetabled as a public service rather than a works train for anyone needing to get to Loughton at that time in the morning!

Pleased to say the restoration of BEA coach MLL738 is as complete as it can be, now restoring MLL721

Some of the Cravens DMUs I worked on at kings Cross still had Epping and Ongar on the destinations! (nothing to do with steam on the Central but the DMUs did replace steam)...

hi
Interesting stuff, I would love to see pics of the DMU's on the central, I have only seen one that was a 108 or something like it going westbound at woodford it was taken I think on a Sunday
one thing though that timetable I posted was 1958 and the steam to ongar ended in 1957 I guess it was still run as a staff train

hi DMU's on the central, I have only seen one that was a 108 or something like it going westbound at Woodford A 108 would have been a rare sighting anywhere south of the Trent. But their front ends were a standard design also used by classes 107, 114-119, 121, 122, 125 and 127. Most likely is one of the "Lea Valley" diesel hydraulic units - class 125.
