Just a quick post to say thank you to the very helpful female driver at Earls Court, who announced which Eastbound train was leaving first!
Usually, when you are on a Eastbound train and there is another on the opposing platform (for instance one going to Tower Hill and the one going to Upminster) you have to guess which one will leave first, and more often than not it's the train on the opposite platform. Very annoying. So it was refreshing to hear a helpful announcement about it. Just makes me wonder why don't they do this more often?

Just makes me wonder why don't they do this more often? Possibly because it can cause pandemonium if the train is quite full and everyone decides to jump up and rush across the platform. Also, does the driver know if there will be time for people to the change before the other train is supposed to depart? It's always annoying at Edgeware Road when you've been sitting in a train for five minutes waiting for the driver to finish his tea and another train to the exact same destination pulls in and leave while you still wait.

Its a shame that standards have dropped so low that something that should be expected like letting passengers know about a train leaving first comes as a surprise

That's unusual. Whenever I am on an EB train at Earl's Court the driver 90% of the time announces which train is going first. Also, near the destination indicators, there is a third indicator which says which train will be leaving first - from platform 1 or 2.

This indicator only shows for trains towards Gloucester Road, this is usually what the referred to "helpful drivers" rely on for accurate information!

In all the times I've been to Earls Court I've never knew they were there! I'm not the most observant person as you can probably guess. I'll have a look out for them next time

It could do with the pigeon mess being cleaned off it.

Am l right that the blanked out panel in that photo once bore "Charing Cross" which was once a regular timetabled destination before the name change to Embankment??

Many thanks for the photo, now I'll always be able to get on the right train without seeing the doors of the opposite train annoyingly close!

The describer plates have changed a few times since installation c.1908, the most recent in 2009. Charing Cross, Whitechapel, Bow Road, East Ham and Southend were once available, as were the various non-stopping indications.

Them indicators are fed off the programme machines if the signal op has manual control of the site then the "NEXT TRAIN TO DEPART" indicator don't come up until the signal is selected usually only giving the passengers a couple of seconds to change trains. Not very helpful if the driver does not wait for a few extra seconds and makes a PA

I'll have a look out for them next time The only problem now is that where the additional camera have been installed on the platform it is nigh on impossible to see the "first train" indicator from the cab

Drivers avoid doing this because a majority of people dont listen or really care as they have headphones in their ear and the problem of an information overload is key because then theyll get confused or think the train is going out of service as well as the problem of if the train leaves while passengers make their way to the train

I remember one occasion when there were trains to the City on both platforms, and no indication of which one would go first. I was standing at the door on one train when the other platform got a green light. So I stepped off and ran across the platform, but the driver closed the doors immediately. As I turned to go back to my original train the doors on that one closed too. The signaller must have given green lights to both trains more or less simultaneously, and both trains departed together, leaving me seething on the platform!

The indicators are replicas of the original. They were installed in 2009.
On Thursday night our driver announced as we entered the platform that the train on the other platform would leave first.
As we stopped the doors on the other train closed.

Yes that can happen especially when the service is not running correctly and the site is under manual control.
