No, I'm not suggesting a tour up and down the Drain over and over again! Just wondering though, was it ever considered to have a run a rail tour around the Southern using the 1940 W&C Stock? Six carraiges could've been hauled up the lift and backed into Waterloo where the tour would've started. From there it could go anywhere, not only on the South Western division but further afield to places such as Croydon and Bromley.
There were lots of odd rail tours in the 70/80's - a 4COR at Euston I believe, a Hastings DEMU to Stanmore plus of course Sarah Siddons visiting Waterloo attached to 4-SUB 4732.
So could a rail tour with W&C Stock have been a goer? I certainly would have booked up!

The 4COR toured the Euston to Watford DC line. I recall seeing a picture of it passing Watford High Street in a railway magazine at the time.

Although the 1940 EE Stock was never used on a railtour (as far as I know), it did work on the main line under its own power. It surfaced from time to time for various test runs, but the first and second rounds of heavy overhauls was done at Lancing Works, and went to/from under their own power. There are several photos around of the stock on the main line at various locations. Moreover, when they were new, they were first tested on the Brighton main line, based at Brighton.

Not a railtour but I believe the 1940 Stock would be seen above ground when NSE held its 'Network Days'.

I saw a W&C car trundling along the SWML at Clapham Junction a couple of times. I understand they were sometimes sent to Wimbledon depot for some work not within the capabilities of Waterloo depot - for example Wimbledon had a wheel lathe

Certainly did go to East Wimbledon, also Selhurst. A small few were also overhauled at Swindon (loco-hauled, of course). I am also sure that the Wimbledon and Selhurst ones were loco hauled as they were mostly individual cars. Trains on the SWML under their own power were usually test trains.

The 1940 stock definitely made its way down as far as Alton, though apparently the testing had to be curtailed whenever it startted raining due to the trains having no windscreen wipers!

Just for info:
1940 EE Stock delivered between March and June 1940. All cars at Brighton at various dates between July and September 1940 (not all at once). First cycle overhauls at Lancing throughout 1950 under own power in 5-car formations. Last train 3-car M-T-M. Second cycle overhauls at Lancing 1958-1963 (cars done singly or in pairs, which suggest not under their own power). Third cycle overhauls at Eastleigh (1969-1971) and Selhurst (1972-1977). All cars individually. Fourth round overhauls at Selhurst (1976-1984), Swindon (1984-1986) and Eastleigh (1986-1987). All done individually. Six cars were not overhauled in the fourth cycle.
Flooding of W&C 23.11.75 - Seven motor cars sent to East Wimbledon for repair. Asbestos work - Five cars dealt with at Selhurst 1983-84. Electrical mods - Four cars done at Clapham 1985. Door circuit re-wiring - Two cars to Eastleigh 1989. Other affected cars dealt with at Waterloo.

Not really a railtour answer, but there were proposals to transfer the WC stock to the Isle of Wight; this was not followed through because of the above comment: the trains weren't fitted with wipers nor train heating! In my time as a driver at Waterloo I never had the chance to drive WC stock on the surface.

There is a photograph of a single W&C car under its own on the main line on route to or from repairs/servicing. It was in a book but I can't remember which.

I have seen a photo on the internet (some time ago) of a single car undergoing some sort of testing on the Alton branch.

I know of the photo the @reganorak and phillw48 refer to - it was in one of Colin J Marsden's many books on SR EMU's. Edited to add. I knew I had a copy somewhere - this is from Southern Electric Multiple Units 1898-1948, the photo is the author's own. The caption says 'In connection with a series of CM&EE tests carried out on motor coach S58 during the late summer of 1977, the vehicle was brought to the surface and operated under it's own power between Farnham and Alton. Here the vehicle awaits departure from Farnham on 27 September 1977. If it began to rain during these trials the car was soon taken out of service and placed under cover in Farnham Shed as it was not fitted with windscreen wipers!' I'm sure somewhere I've seen a picture of said car at Alton also. If I find it, I'll post it here too.

The one I referred to was a bit different, IIRC it was taken on an open section of line. As I now remember due to the references above it was also taken on the Alton line, almost certainly on the same occasion.
