District line D stocks don't routinely use platform 3 (the "bay road"). D stock Barking terminators use the eastbound "main", though only open doors on the platform 2 side. LU detrainment staff are provided to ensure terminating trains don't sit down in the platform for too long and they reverse empty via the sidings to the east of Barking.
All that being said, it is absolutely possible for a D stock to reverse via platform 3 (engineering works or service recovery following an incident for example) but otherwise its not timetabled and thus isn't "normal".
In terms of your question "has anyone seen this before?".............D stocks stopped routinely using the bay platform around December 2009, when the Hammersmith & City line was extended from Whitechapel to Barking throughout the day 7 days a week. Prior to 2009 a D stock in the bay platform wasn't at all unusual.

Every time I see this thread title I keep thinking of Arnie!
Out of interest, how many District trains terminate at Barking? Obviously there will be occasional short trips from delays etc. but are many trains scheduled to reverse aside from the H&City service?
Is Dagenham East used much?

There are no scheduled off peak reversers at Dagenham East or Barking on Monday to Friday. Both see timetabled use in the peak though, and trains will terminate at Barking in the evening in order to stable, although as far as I know there are no Barking inter peak stablers on the District or H&C.

There used to be a few late night reversers which headed back to Ealing Broadway using Platform 3 is this still the case?

With late running in the morning peak, anybody going east the journey can be a nightmare. I have been at Barking with two or three trains reversing at Barking then getting on a Dagenham East reverser to find it reversed in the main as a train was already in the bay. A depot to depot came in running to Upminster which meant it was not going back so passengers waiting for a Westbound from Elm Pk to Upminster had over a half hour gap.

A depot to depot came in running to Upminster which meant it was not going back so passengers waiting for a Westbound from Elm Pk to Upminster had over a half hour gap. This happened quite frequently when I used to travel from Dagenham East to Upminster (just before the evening peak), which meant that I often missed my connection at Upminster. When a train did arrive for Upminster it was usually packed. A T/O once told me that someone at Barking would turn back every train irrespective of its intended destination. In the end after waiting up to an hour at Dagenham East I went back to commuting by car. This was 8 or 9 years ago and it seems from the above that things have not changed.
