What colour were the hamburger huts before their current yellow?
And are there any wooden-topped ones still on the system?

I presume your talking about engineering trains. If so, it's a bit before my time, though I believe some were red in the 70's.

Yeah, all over the place - theres a whole bank of 'em in Morden Depot, and a nice group in Highgate.

They're section isolating switches. They're everywhere on the network.

To answer the original queation I think they were plain creosoted wood with the coloured plate on the front. Not only that but some had no door either. There were also horizontal ones laid on the floor or on a deck of sleepers. I think if you look through the LU museum photo collection you may see some in an old pic somewhere.
By-the-way they used to be called "Sentry boxes"
