Hi all Travelled on the Met this evening on train 21053 from Baker Street to Chalfont. While on the train I noticed that "please mind the gap between the train and the platform" announcement was made in a male voice while the other announcements for next station etc were made in the normal female tone. This is the only time I've noticed it and it happened at every station where the gap announcement is normally made (Wembley Park, Rickmanaworth etc), and it was defiantly computerised and not the driver! Just wondering if anybody could shed a light on it? Is it a new modification being rolled out or a glitch? Thanks for you help! Kabsonline

This was discussed on Twitter in quite some detail yesterday. The following should start you off: and clickyBasically as a way of making people pay attention so that they don't fall down the gap between the Platform/Train Interface that now appears bigger because of the bigger gap different angle of the S Stock trains. Hopefully the change in voice should rouse people from their slumbers and ending up under a train.

I have come across this before, important safety messages are male as it is psychologically more authoratative.
Have you ever heard a female Inspector Sands?

This is now a thing. The voice-over artist used is Phil Sayer who some might recognise from the 'mind the gap' announcements at stations such as Holborn. He also announces at many National rail stations including London Waterloo and Clapham Junction. Phil Sayer can be seen in this clip alongside his wife Elinor Hamilton (the one who voices various platform announcements such as "Piccadilly line. The train now approaching is to Uxbridge. Please stand back from the platform edge.")

On Tramlink, we have a Male Announcer (I beleive it is Nicholas Owen) for normal announcements such as "This Tram is for Wimbledon" and then a woman's voice telling us other details such as interchanges or "If you do not have a Ticket Valid for Travel on London Tramlink, you are liable for a penalty fare"

Perhaps they should use a dalek voice: Mind the gap or be exterminated

Perhaps they should use a dalek voice: Mind the gap or be exterminated Or from The Terminator: Mind the Gap or be terminated.

I think the termination messages should be read by a male voice too - these are more important than 'mind the gap'. Ahhh... Think she's does the Jubilee line one too! Yep, any Tubelines managed station you're likely to hear her. On Tramlink, we have a Male Announcer (I beleive it is Nicholas Owen) for normal announcements such as "This Tram is for Wimbledon" and then a woman's voice telling us other details such as interchanges or "If you do not have a Ticket Valid for Travel on London Tramlink, you are liable for a penalty fare" Indeed the male voice on Tramlink is Nick Owen. The female announcer is Theo Spring.

For those who haven't seen a tram (they are like an S stock but lower, and more Green) here is a video which demonstrates the 2 types of announcement within the first 16 seconds
Thanks to LondonBuses1 who filmed this

Indeed, I'm not a fan of TfL's decision to phase out Emma in favour of Sarah Parnell. She doesn't sound so bad on the 2009 stock, but she is at her worst on the S stock. Some of his and Celia's recordings pre-date even the noughties; they have been used by DITRA since 1996. It is a shame that more and more operators are ditching DITRA in favour of the cheap ATOS voice.

Are they coming back from Darby with the change or is it being changed in London, I'm on 21070 and it's still the female voice.

I have noticed the change on some units over recent days. Yes, you can tell the difference, but as there are so many announcements on trains / stations these days, I fear people just go on auto pilot and ignore or not listen to them. Many of the automated announcements on stations, perhaps less so on trains, are just not needed are are wrong. The often repeated good service announcement is just not needed, especially when you are delays and have just heard a local announcement saying there is a delay! Perhaps by making safety related announcements (about gaps) etc a louder volume may help, the male announcement on Jubilee trains telling people to all change seems louder than the normal female voice, so you tend to notice it.

Heard one this morning. The male voice sounds remarkably like the voice to be heard all over South West Trains? May be wrong?

I think a Borg voice: "Mind the Gap - and in either case you will be assimilated. Resistance is futile."

"Resistance is futile" should be in a Vogon voice.
"The hours are good, but now that you come to mention it, the minutes are a bit boring".

Another 'irregularity' is catching an all stations Aldgate train at Pinner, then luckily hearing the platform announcer at Harrow tell you it's a fast service and next stop is Finchley Road! Glad I heard and jumped off (as I now work in Wembley). Bet there were a few disgruntled peeps aboard as the train still displayed all stations!
