Can anyone tell me what actually happens at these days?
The information of the site seems patchy.
Are you able to wander around by yourself and look at/photograph the old stock that they hold or do you have to wait for official tours?
If so, can you do this at any time during the open day?

Went to the Upminster one ages ago. You can look around yourself (in the fenced site). They did tours of the underneath of the D/C stock. They all happen throughout the open day. There is also a display of other stock, and often some stalls.
Depends really on the type of open day.

Upminster was for it's 50th anniversary in 2009. Might have to wait another 50 years when S stock will be vintage and the trains will be maglev propulsion.

The Neasden Depot Open Day is listed as the only one this year, Saturday 31 August. ETA: Sorry, I should have entitled the thread: "LU Museum Depot 'open Days'" There's one at Acton listed Here. However, I only want to go if I can wander round the old tube stock and photograph it. I don't want to waste the time and money only to turn up and find the the open day consists of a tour of old ticket hall equipment. It's really very poor that they don't make clear on that site just what you can expect from these days.

The Acton depot open days are good if you want to wander about the trains as you describe. The inly piece of advice I would give you is to pre-book your ticket! The forum meet afterwards is a good time too!

Absolutely. An Acton Depot open day is well worth a visit.
Whilst the interiors of all the "sensitive" stuff is kinda cordoned off, if you ask nicely there is always the chance that you will be invited to have a look around.
If you're not feeling so bold then IMHO it's worth it for the "tat shop". My cash safe at work has a sticker above the keyhole stating that you must touch in and touch out or be liable for a penalty fare, and then there is the case of the forum member who attracted the attention of BTP whilst walking to the Red Lion & Pineapple for carrying an enamel station sign [legitimately purchased: I hasten to add].
There are many, many, many, many opportunities to photograph the exterior of old tube (and SSR) stock. Every time I've been I've had fourty winks in the 38ts too.

Just how much is on show depends a lot on how many volunteer staff can be found. Apart from a few vehicles with asbestos problems, the interiors of all vehicles which aren't used for storage or in bits will be open if there is a member of staff to keep an eye on them. In practice there probably won't be enough staff, so we'll shuffle around a bit.
If we've got loads of staff or it's reasonably quiet then some cabs might even be open, but this tends to have the result of every child within the M25 wanting to play. It's hard to do that much damage without a key, but we really don't want anyone putting the 38 stock cab out of commission.

Does your road name have an apostrophe in it? Mine does and the site would not accept it with the apostrophe present. It took a while to figure that out as the site is rather amateurishly coded and does not tell you hat it's complaining about. (Given the weak coding, other things it might be whining about are the presence of absence of a space in the post code of spaces in a telephone number.)

Bought my ticket for the acton open day online yesterday.
Quick question about collecting my tickets since I am traveling up from south wales , can I pick them up at Acton or do I have to visit the museum at covent garden to pick up my ticket?.
I last visited Acton back in March 2008 and on that occasion someone else purchased my ticket for me when they ordered theirs and that was a great day out certainly enjoyed spending a couple of hous wandering around Acton depot.
I can only hope the weather is kind to us that weekend.

I got mine through the post. I'm pretty sure I selected "collect at museum" since that means less chance of the tickets getting lost. Nonetheless, they turned up in the post a couple of days later.

Last time I collected at the depot, I did have the dilemma of should I join the queue to buy tickets (v.long) or could I jump it? Luckily the nice lady marshalling the end of the queue said I could just go straight to the front as there was a separate person dealing with collections.

I went last year, just bought tickets at Acton Town, queue wasn't that long. Probably won't go this year.

It's a very nice ticket with the 150 years logo on it in gold, what are the chance of keeping it?
