The Model Railway Magazines seem nowadays to be full of special offers of coal wagons in various liveries. You can of course run whatever you like on your layout but over the years I like to think I have formed a general opinion of their working in pre war years (before their control was taken over' by the Railways.) There were roughly four types of PO wagon- Colliery wagons, Coal Distributors ( GLM, SC,etc.) Large users(Gas and Electricity cos. or large manufacurers) and Local coal merchants who often owned (or hired) only one or two with their own name on them. Presumably they would also make use of Colliery or Distributer's wagons when neccesary. Block Loads. (all the same owner) These usually ran from the Colliery Sidings to a nearby Yard for distribution. Even in the Colliery Sidings there would be the odd Coal Merchant's wagon or other wagons. A dozen or more the same may have made their way to London for onwards distribution. (I did a lot of my train watching at Headstone Lane on the WCML and often saw the Coronation Scot there !) Photos in Mags. often show a string of unlikely identical wagons ( sometimes all Yellow !!) in the sidings. One other thing - wagons were of various sizes -six and seven planks, 10 or 12 Tons and some with End Doors and the coal loads themselves were of different sizes ie. large lumps down to fine chips. Let's have some variety !!
