At 20.55 tonight at Finchley Road a Metropolitan line train appeared - all stations Rayners Lane. This is the first time I've ever seen a Met to Rayners Lane. The following 2 trains were for Uxbridge, and there were "severe delays" between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge. How unusual is this?

Unusual! There is a crossover at Rayners and perhaps a train was already reversing at Harrow so the Line controller had no choice. I'm sure one those involved will be along soon to give a more accurate reason.

Unusual, but not as uncommon as some might think. I've seen it before, although most late running Uxbridge trains tend to be reversed at Ruislip. It probably reversed in the W/B platform at Rayners Lane. The siding would be a less likely option, as this is used regularly by Piccadily line trains.

I've always wondered if Met trains are permitted to reverse in the reversal siding at Rayners?

I've always wondered if Met trains are permitted to reverse in the reversal siding at Rayners? Yes the met can use the siding but usually reverse off the platform as there's invariably a picc in the siding. A points failure @ Rayners along with earlier failures @ Swiss cottage and Liverpool street were the reason behind the disrupted services today

I've always wondered if Met trains are permitted to reverse in the reversal siding at Rayners? The siding is 145.4m (quoted change 4/11/11). An S8 is 133.7m.

There was meant to be one reversing at Rayners Lane but in the end didn't appear. I can confirm indeed we can reverse via the siding as well as off the w/b platform to go back East. It's rather undesirable IMHO unless all the planets align perfectally, invariably a met reverser will turn up whilst there's a booked a Piccadilly reverser around and if we're reversing off the platform we need to get customers across the bridge as it's likely we're experincing gaps in the service which holds up other trains on the W/B.

...and just to back up this thread,I've just got off a Rayners Lane train! Can't remember the set or unit, but it was on a short trip. There may be a few delays as an Uxbridge train was entering service from Neasden depot and I saw no S stock in either direction between Finchley Road and Neasden

Is there any record of A Stock reversing in the siding at Rayners Lane. I used to travel on the Uxbridge branch on a daily basis up to the mid 1980's and never recall seeing such an event. The only time I witnessed a Rayners Lane reverser was on Christmas Day when the service reversed from the WB platform using the crosssover to the east of the station. I recall photographing the event but would have to think very hard as to which year that would have been.

I've never seen an A stock reverse via the siding but I believe they have. Would love to see a photo.

I've reveresed A stocks via the siding a couple of times to recover late running and one night after tresspassers on the track at Harrow I sent E/B trains back West

When was the dis-used bridge beyond the end of the sidings at Rayners removed?
Any idea why it was built in the first place? An un-realised housing development perhaps?

The 1920 1 inch OS map shows the bridge in the middle of nowhere before the housing was built around Rayners Lane. Another larger scale map I have pre WWII whilst the housing was being built shows a siding swinging off the Met Line South West past the southern end of the bridge. The south side of the bridge is shown as swinging off to the west. I know there was a siding built to supply materials for building the housing - I'd love to see a photo! At some stage the southern side of the bridge was demolished leaving an overhang. The 1945 1 inch OS map still shows the siding although the hosuing had been long finished. Perhaps the map hadn't been revised properly and the siding had been removed by then. I live in the area but can't remember precisely when the bridge was demolished. I did take a photo from it back in the early seventies - see Flickr back in the good old days when such locations were not fenced off. Probably quite a rare shot.

From memory the bridge was removed about eight to ten years ago I think. It was certainly in the 2000s.

A friend of mine (and L1Group's) has a picture of an S8 at the Rayners Lane siding:
