The Bank one sounds like Peter Lodge. There seems to be a lot of muddle surrounding this story. Lodge was the engineer whose test recording became the "official" announcement after an actor asked for performance royalties. Lodge received a one-off payment. He was pre-deceased by his wife. His son is a good friend of mine... Which recording is actually being re-instated??

The story belongs to the Guardian... so I would take it to be the named person from that story... From my uneducated ear and clearly defective memory, didn't realise there was more than one recording... as the stations that broadcast them sounded the same to me... How many recordings pre dating the 1990s have there been... and at which station were each broadcast

OK...I know for certain that Waterloo used Peter Lodge's recording. I believe his recording was also used at Bank and Embankment but I am happy to be corrected. Lodge was a pioneer of digital recording technology in the UK,and this was chosen because of the number of times a recording was used (hundreds of times a day) and it was the actor's demand for repeat royalties that led to Lodge's test recording to be used. The story is in Wikipedia under "Mind the Gap!" This is the first time I have heard of a named actor...

Do I remember correctly that at Victoria (District and Circle lines) the 'Mind that Gap' phrase was actually made afresh by a member of the platform staff each time?
It sounds unlikely but I distinctly remember a very 'Jamaican' accent who intoned the phrase with a very long 'Mind', and a very short 'the': "Miiiiind d'Gap" and any other, ad hoc announcements would be made in the same accent. It was well before digital recording and yet there was never any hissing or crackling accompanying the words.
It seems so long ago and I can't remember if there were other announcers interspersed on different days.

Interesting article. It is good that they mention the following: "Actor Tim Bentinck was the voice on the Piccadilly Line for 15 years from 1990 and was paid £200 for various safety messages." It is a shame that his voice - along with Julie Berry's who could be heard at Piccadilly Circus and Covent Garden - were removed when the stations were upgraded to the Phil/Elinor system. Julie and Tim's voices can be heard in this BVE clip: Piccadilly Circus, Covent Garden, Holborn and Russell Square.

I'm sure that it was the Peter Lodge recording that was used at Bank, Waterloo and Embankment. They all sounded exactly the same.

I got my own recording of Mr Laurence's recording today. Didn't even realise while I was passing through but as soon as I heard it I hit record on my phone Apols about the shaky video but I was recording it for the audio more than anything.
