Apparently work on a private construction project in the Old Street area spilled over into the Northern City Line tunnels around 10AM this morning putting the line between Moorgate and Finsbury Park out of service throughout today. /photo/1

Two construction drills broke through into a railway tunnel in east London on a busy First Capital Connect route.
Services on the Moorgate to Finsbury Park route were stopped after a driver said muddy water had poured on to his roof near Old Street Station.
An hour later, at about 11:00 GMT, two piling drills came through as a train with only a driver and Network Rail manager approached to inspect the area.
The train operator said a "serious incident" had been averted.
The route on the Northern City line was closed after the incident on Friday morning and will remain closed over the weekend during investigations and while the damage is repaired.
British Transport Police has visited an office construction site located above the tunnel.
First Capital Connect managing director Neal Lawson said: "This was a serious incident that could have ended very differently had it not been for the vigilance and prompt reporting and actions of our drivers.
"We carry two million people a year on the Northern City Line and whoever is responsible for this must be held to account."
Network Rail route managing director Phil Verster said: "Our engineers are on site assessing the damage and we will restore the railway as soon as possible."
It is expected that the route will reopen on Monday.

I hope those new-fangled driverless trains we have been promised, will react in such an exemplary manner....

My initial thought was that the train approaching when the drills broke through wouldn't have been driverless as it was conveying a manager to examine the line. However, the reason they were examining the line was because a driver reported muddy water pouring onto the roof of his train, which is something a driverless train is very unlikely to have sensors to detect (and how would they distinguish it from rain if they did?).

That was sort-of my point. The driver saw an issue and reacted, averting any possible danger. I cannot see how the driverless trains that Boris has promised us would be able to react in a similar manner. Thus proving, using a real instance as an example,a flaw in the proposal to phase out drivers.

What about the DLR into Bank then? Presumably the 'train captain' would be the one in the position of reporting something unusual like this. Why would that be different on mainline trains?

similar thing happened near Wanstead in 1986, 62TS collided with drill bit from M11 work which had pierced the tunnel. Impact speed about 35mph, driver ducked and luckily avoided the substantial damage to the cab which ensued. Scary..........

The drill was hard enough to penetrate as far as the back wall of the cab. The driver was very lucky.

Look forward to following this one through the legal system. Just goes to show that no amount of paperwork can substitute for not being dumb...
Why would anyone go to the trouble and expense of test piles without first consulting a basic parlimentry map?
