I'm having trouble finding a decent pic of a Q38 trailer say late 50's/early 60's with window detail. Most shots tend to be with the train 3/4 front showing the driver quite well but with other cars quite oblique.
It looks like Q23 and Q27 drivers were non-smoking (though some Q27 driving cars don't seem to have the window transfers).
Can anyone confirm the Q38 trailer cards were normally smoking cars?
Tks
Edit: Ooops I meant to say, there are a couple of pre-war B&W pics on LT Museum website which show a Q38 as NON-smoking and with window transfers in quite a low postion as compared with say the presrved Q23 driving car. What I'm looking for is confirmation of Q38 status in post war era particularly late 50's/early 60's.

My notes say -
14.06.64 No-smoking cars on the District Line increased to four cars (6-car trains) or five cars (8-car trains) for Q and CP Stock. R Stock from 21.06.64. This means a Q38 trrailer could be either.

Sorry for the short answer my misses was having moan to me! The Q stock formations were of course M-T-T-M+T-M(+T-M) The trailers (1938-1960ish) were generally non-smoking and the motor cars were smoking. The exception was the 1st/3rd class trailers (of which the Q38 had many)which had 1st class smoking, 1st class non-smoking and 3rd class non-smoking. This all came to an end in 1940. From about 1960ish the motor cars became non-smoking an some trailers became smoking. These were generally the older cars (Q31-35) in Q stock sets and the newer cars stayed non-smoking. Therefore your best bet is make your Q38 trailer non-smoking

Thanks Reg, as ever you have been able to narrow things down to really help everyone out!
I'm currently working (slowly) on a Q stock set, and as my historic stock is based on the late 1930s- early 1960s this is of interest to me.
My Q stock set will be Q31-Q38-Q35-Q38+Q38-Q27.The Q31 motor can be changed with a Q23 motor for late 50s operation! Therefore it appears as if my Q38 trailers will be non-smoking along with the Q35 trailer.

Great minds and all that! Am currently working on 4 car set Q23-Q38-Q35-Q27 which will have trailers smoking and Q23/Q27 non-smoking for 1960-ish.

Staying on the subject of smoking in trains, the most difficult element I have been finding is to pinpoint smoking sections in Met compartment cars! It appears that a couple of compartments per coach were non-smoking and the rest were not! Complicate that with the ladies only section, usually closest to the guard!!

My Q stock set is Q23-Q35-Q38-Q38+Q35-Q27. Or at least it will be when I get my Q27 back.... ;-)

I was working on it earlier!
You may have to wait a little longer because it has to go to Phil and you know what he's like! Still waiting for the Q23 motor!
