Just to enlighten you guys in the UK a bit!
If I'm not mistaken, the whole idea of Train Simulation was born out of a game which hit the arcades in 1996. The game is called "Let's Go by Train" in English. I am fortunate enough to have the oldest version (identical to the 1996 arcade game) available on my laptop and made a video on a relatively short route.
This "sim" is more of a game, with point accumulation and high score tables. However, it still requires following basic principles and you need excellent line knowledge to play well, or you'll most likely end up running out of points through overspeeding. The main emphasis of the game is to go by the diagram to the second, and to stop at stations extremely accurately.
There are currently newer versions of this game available on PS2 and eventually the Wii, provided you are in Japan, which is rather unfortunate. The newer versions feature more routes from commuter, rural diesel and the bullet trains. Judging from in-game videos, they have a more realistic acceleration, sounds, physics over the old version and a comfort meter much like BVE2 while at the same time, you get more cheesy music! I do not own a PS2 so as much as I'd like to try the game I haven't managed.
If it is possible for anyone trainsim buffs here to get hold of these Japanese games, they are well worth a try. It kills MSTS any day.

Nice driving mate. I missed the "people-o-meter" in BVE4.
