I've noticed that on many d stock units photos parked up in the depot have Wooden Planks wedged down the side of the drivers window, i was just wondering what this is to symbolise?

Don't be daft, even the cab of a D stock isn't big enough for a plank (.....I'll leave the jokes to someone else....). Perhaps you're thinking of paddles! |

The M door has a lock which holds the door closed and locked top and bottom by lifting the door handle up where it locks a bar into the top and bottom door opening. This is not always reliable and the locking rods rattle a bit. What you need is a piece of wood, coincidentally about shoe paddle sized and shaped, to lock the handle in its upright position.
Paddles were used like this on 1959/60/62 stock and may be used on others as well.
