I was wondering if anyone could help me.
I'm doing a project on looking at the impact of rail trails (i.e. disused railway converted to multiuse paths\cycleways) on the environment and surrounding communities for college. I was hoping and would really appreciate the help if anyone could suggest any books, papers, website links or other resources on this subject.

At the risk of telling you what you already know, may I suggest starting with the Peak District National Park, who manage a number of converted railway routes as cycleways? And East Sussex or the relevant district council (Wealden?) should have material on the Hailsham-Polegate route.

Sustrans own/operate many former railway routes as cycleways. When ex railway routes owned by Sustrans have had proposals for re-opening, they have generally refused to co-operate. A notable example is the Rugby - Leamington line, which EWS planned to partially reopen in the late 1990s but I believe Sustrans refused to sell the land.

thanks. I am planning to stick with UK ones. The Rugby to Leamington one looks like an intersting debate. I am also to look at the advantages and disadvantages of them in general. I think some of the suggestions should help with the background.

The wonderful book Railway Atlas - Then and Now by Paul Smith and Keith Turner has a lot of information on many reused rail trails on the "now" side of each page. Well worth the price in my estimation.
