Today I decided to have a rounder on the Circle - first time in months! Opened BVE2 and it opened windowed! Thing is, it's never done that before (always full screen 640x480) and even if you change the settings once open, it ignores you. But it was exactly what I wanted!!
So, question is: how did BVE2 open windowed this time and, more importantly how do I get it to do it again? Needless to say I tried after I closed it and it wouldn't repeat the action.
Info: BVE2 and BVE4 are installed in completely different places and BVE4 always gives you the choice of windowed or full screen every time you open.

I've never used BVE2 so I can't say for certain, but what setting do you use for BVE4, and is there any chance that BVE2 is picking up a setting from the Windows Registry instead of a config file? BVE4 stores settings in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\mackoy\bve and it looks like Fillscreen is a toggle for windowed or full screen with a value of 0 or 1. There is also a value called ShowDispConfig that may toggle whether it asks what display mode to run in at startup.

Ah, that's a great help, but not complete. All you say is right about BVE4 and the ShowdispConfig does indeed toggle it. So all I need do now is to find the equivalent registry folder for BVE2, which is NOT in the same place!! Any more ideas?

Found it, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\BVE\Settings and try port. This is a slightly odd spot but it makes some sense sinve BVE2 appears to have been written in VB while BVE4 is in VB.net.

Yes and no! Found the registry entries (well done for that!) but changing port (or switch) does nothing obvious.
what's really annoying is that in the program files there is a file called 'string.ini' which tells you which files all the settings are in, the one I want being 'DspSize', but I can't find it. I assume it's tucked away in the BVE.exe file and so inaccessible (unless someone knows different...)
Edit: found it thanks to you!! I went through the whole registry using 'search' and found a key setting the screen to 640x480. Deleted it and it's fine.

Happy to be of assistance, for future reference what is the key? Ah, the phrase 'oh s*d it' springs to mind. It didn't have a name but its description was 'screen size 640x480', and was in a 'box' on its own under a BVE tag. But sorry, I can't remember where this box was!!! 'Search' (set just for BVE) found it.
