Swedish mainline railway company SJ AB (the former state railways) have started an unusual advertising campaign. They have rented farmland in the approach paths to several of Sweden's largest airports and cut out advertisments for low-price train tickets in them. ;D The tickets advertised are of course for the towns located next to the airports. This is actually an unusual and clever idea, because it's unusual people will look and take note. They have even got free publicity from the media.

Can I propose a rule - all posts in ENGLISH!!!! Aren't you supposed to be, like, in school, where you, like, you know, learn foreign languages n' stuff? Learn to find opportunity in adversity! See this as a great motivation for you to become a polyglot master of languages! Impress your teacher by being able to say "Mind the doors" in full seventy-nine languages! ;D |

I've learnt Spanish and French (to an extent!!!) but not Russian, Swdish etc. Anyway, i'm practising my English.

They haven't dropped languages entirly at GCSE. There is one or two schools in my local area where you have a choice on whether you want to learn them or not, but at my school German or French was compulsary and you had a choice whether you wanted to do Spanish on top of one of those. I ended up doing Spanish and French and am predicted A's in both, whether I get them we'll have to wait till the end of August, but I think languages are still widely taught. There was a rumour of children learining French at 7 or 8. I think the common view of languages is that students don't care about that, but i took a bit of care and am glad that i managed to achieve something. (Hopefully!)

Not statutary, but the majority of schools still feel the need for languages so pursure teaching them.
If you ask me (though people rarely do!), there is little point the English learing French, and the French learning English. If everybody learnt one languge (English) life would be much simpler!

If you read the link, you would notice that it is still a requirement for schools to offer the teaching of languages, it is just no longer compulsory to study them.
Maybe if everyone learnt one language it would be simpler, but where's the fun in that?

As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish (Euro for short). In the first year, 's' will be used instead of the soft 'c'. Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy. Also, the hard 'c' will be replaced with 'k.' Not only will this klear up konfusion, but typewriters kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome 'ph' will be replaced by 'f'. This will make words like 'fotograf' 20 per sent shorter. In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent 'e's in the languag is disgrasful, and they would go. By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing 'th' by 'z' and 'W' by 'V'. During ze fifz year, ze unesesary 'o' kan be dropd from vords kontaining 'ou', and similar changes vud of kors; be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil b no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech ozer. Ze drem vil finali kum tru. |

When abroad we just speak very slowly and SHOUT. ;D ;D ;D Seriously the standard of language teaching over here has steadily dropped over the years. These days instead of detailed understanding of the language it is more a case of ' how to get by on holiday' for all but the brightest. The other problem is that kids are not taught languages until 11 yrs old- far too old to start IMO. Our curriculum also means that a pupil who could become fluent in several languages just isn't given the chance- normally the maximum is two. |

One of my friends has 4 language GCSE's. His dad is very keen on languages, and is currently teaching himself Norweign and Arabic. He can already speak more languages then anyone else I know!

Well, in the last two years of my schooling, I had to put up with trying to get me tongue around French. I didn't succeed.
