Having only just joined the forum I haven't a clue how to start a new thread. This being "District Dave" I would like to ask if anybody has any drawings or photos of the manual door G-stock. These were still running when I was a small child, from Hounslow West into Earls Court and Central London. This line then was District Surface Stock and the G-stock had clerestory roofs and sliding MANUAL doors. This was 1941 - 42. A little later (say 1945 - 46) the stock was augmented by one "flared skirt" car similar to an R-stock trailer in each set. M - T - R stock trailer - M or M - T - R stock trailer - UNDM. This stock was renamed Q23 stock. This is as far as I can remember. I model in OO gauge 4 mm scale. Can anybody please tell me more about these very unusual trains. I would so like to model them.

G stock (also the broadly similar K and L stocks, but without the distinctive "Dutch Gable" front profile) did originally have hand-worked doors, but after conversion to power operation were all reclassified as Q stock (the G stock becoming Q23 stock), along with the later M and N (later Q35) stocks which had been power operated from the start. Any vehicles still awaiting conversion, and older C, D and E stock not to be converted, were classified "H" (presumably for "Hand-operated"). At the same time, 183 new trailer cars and 25 driving motor (DM) cars were built. These were designated "Q38" - they had the same body profile as the new O and P stock "Metadyne" trains appearing on the Metropolitan Line's Hammersmith and Uxbridge services, but the Q38 had electrical equipment compatible with the older Q stock with which it was to operate. Until the arrival of the P stock it was never the practice for the District to run uniform formations and the variable roof profiles were a characteristic feature of their trains until withdrawal of the last Q stock trains in the early 1970s. It was however particularly noticeable when one of the cars was a Q38 trailer!
Many Q38 trailers were later converted into R-stock DM cars, (becoming R38), running with new R47, R49 and R59 NDMs. (there were no R-stock trailer cars - they were all motored but only the end "DM" cars had driving cabs). The small batch of R59 cars was built/converted to allow withdrawal of the very last H-stock, which had been kept on after withdrwal of the rest to operate the occasional Olympia exhibition service.

That's pretty much spot on. All 50 G stock motors cars were converted to Q23 motors in 1938-40 receiving EP brakes and air operated doors. Two of the 50 cars were actually converted to double ended status and were equipped with air doors and a second cab where the guard worked. On the remaining 48 cars, the rear windows in the guards area were blanked off and the guards panel was placed there. The same was done on the F stock. Aside from one car destroyed at Plaistow in the war, the remaining 47 Q23 motors worked with the modern Q38 motors and trailers and the similarly converted K (Q27), L (Q31) and M (35) motors. Until the late 1940s there were only Q38 trailers. All the L,M and N trailers worked with H stock (C/D/E) motors and some trailers. When the R stock started to take Q38 trailers for conversion to R38 motors, L/M/N trailers begain to be converted into Q stock trailers. By the mid 50s all 77 L/M/N trailers had become Q stock along with the 22 Q31/35 motors which were converted to trailers to off set the loss of Q38 trailers. Further Q38 trailers were used to make the 5 car CO/CP Circle trains up to 6 cars and another 5 were used to boost 2 car P stock motor pairs to M-T-M. The Q23 stock also began to be converted to trailers although this was less comprehensive compared with the Q31/35 cars. The guards panels and controls were removed (and given to the six P1 stock cars) along with motors and compressors. The hinged doors were locked. This conversion which affected about 14 cars was only a stop gap as the delivery of 27 A62 trains to the Metropolitan allowed the F stock to be withdrawn and the P stock converted to CP stock placed on the District which allowed all but 14 west facing Q23 cars to be scrapped. The remaining 14 Q23 motors survived until the late 60s early 70s when final withdrawal took place. Radley models are in the process of upgrading their kit of the Q23 now.
