As it is 150 years since the Metropolitan first ran, I think it is apt to link this 40 minute documentary made by the BTF to celebrate the Underground's centenary back in 1963.

Automatic train operation was interesting. Between Northfields and Acton Town??? Yes. It was the proving ground for the Victoria Line. Dell had ATO in his sights for a very long time. Only one unit, mind. I've the signalling notice somewhere - unusually printed on white paper.

Though its undoubtably stilll a marvel of techinical ingenuity, is it fair to say that nowadays with other factors in the background by association, that ATO isn't viewed as positively as perhaps it once was by front line staff? Or is it perhaps the opposite, that confidence in it is now far better than when it was new and totaly unproven? Or something in the middle, subjectively, and always?

Books out again: A set of District Line cars began trials on a one mile stretch of track between South Ealing an Acton Town towards the end of 1962. The equipment was installed on the eastbound track between Stamford brook and Ravenscourt park and on train 123 and the driver put the train into automatic control and the train accelerated coasted and braked to the correct stopping point at Ravenscourt Park. This was the first time fare paying passengers had been conveyed. It must have been just in time for this 1963 film.
