Hi there ! Although my project of building a London Underground layout has been a little bit in stand by lastly (college doesn't let me enough free time…), I've been working on the 3D models I made, both for myself and my future layout, and for John Polley, who plans to sell some of those via Metromodels. I wanted to keep you up to date with the project, as I just received a picture from John showing the 1960, 1967, 1973, 1983 and 2009 stocks DM prototypes (before painting). We're still working on the chassis fastening, but we're slowly getting to it (even though we had some bending problems with Shapeways on the first 2009 four-car train) Stock inspection ! The first painted 2009ts prototype, without windows, and quite bent. There's still quite a lot of work to finish them, like the Coupling system, which will be a separate part, the windows glazing… [edit] changed image size accordingly to rule 8

They look pretty good! What material are they in? The finish looks a bit grainy on several of them.

Thank you ! They're indeed a bit grainy, probably due to the material used (White Strong & Flexible IIRC). However, they are still to be sanded and painted, so we're waiting to see the result before considering other materials.

These look really good. Maybe using a filler primer on the larger areas might help reduce of grainy look of the sides however I would pretty happy with a model of them as they are.
Great to see John nd his team moving forward with 3d printing.

Really impressive stuff! Aside from the slightly grainy finish, this opens up all kinds of new paths for tube modeling to take, including a far broader variety of stock available than previously. Well done

Thanks for the feedback ! I'll try the filler primer, it might be a good solution I just tumbled on an older picture of the first Schöma diesel loco prototype running on Abbey Road : [edit] changed image size accordingly to rule 8

The Shapeways models are looking very good.
The Schoma diesel picture shows just how badly out of scale the signal post and bracket runs are.

Hi Cesar
John told me about your great work and showed me some samples when I met him lat last year. Looks really good, the only problem is you are now progressing faster than my layout!

Looking good. Ref the 1960 Cravens, will it be easy to file back the 'square' headlamp fixture and/or are you doing a version with original light cluster which was much more flush?

I don't know about filing the headlamp fixture. I tried to round it while designing the model, but unfortunately the sopftware I use (Google Sketchup) struggles a little bit with rounded volumes. As for the original light cluster, I 'll probably make a version, which should be a matter of minutes

Would you ever be tempted to do 'fantasy' items of rolling stock now that the design process is simpler, such as the fabled 1960ts trailer car from another thread at the bottom?

Radley Models are doing a 1964 version of the 1960 stock with just the twin marker lights. I know, I've seen the samples!

John Polley told me he would be doing an original version of 60TS in due course when I asked recently. Whether this is pre or post ATO I don't know.

Thanks everyone for the comments ! I've got two days off (End of semester Jury taking place at the university), and I should give a look at the un-clustered '60 stock. Aslo, I just received a mail from John with both those pictures of the 1967, 1973 and 1983 stocks, "roughly painted" to use his words :

Looks great. I have always wanted the 1973 stock it being my favourite stock and never (to my knowledge) being produced before in model form. I have registered interest with metromodels as soon as they were announced and eagerly await the production run and some prices for the models.

They will indeed probably be at action, as John states on his website that he'll take abbey road there northfields : I actually started modelling those on Sketchup because I couldn't find a 1973 stock model too !

I suspect there will be an abundance of '73 stock now. Nice work!

Thanks ! I forgot to mention it, but John exposes Abbey Road at the Victoria Palace model show this weekend, so there should be some 3D printed stocks running

Awesome! Brilliant models! Just out of curiosity how do you know the sizes all the trains though? If you still have them in sketchup would I be able to have them to convert to the Trainz Simulator?
Cheers, TBTC

Hi, fantastic models, but, out of curiosity, what do you use for a 'prototype'? And what running gear do you use or are they just static? Finally, are you planning some of the older stock, such as the standard Tube, 'F' and 'Q' stock? And, dare I suggest it 'Sarah Siddons' or even the 'E' class steam loco L44 (Met No.1). Jim.

I assume that the 1973 and 1983 stock should really be in 3 car units rather than 4 cars, as they both ran as 6 car trains formed from 2 units.
