Why does Crossrail use Connaught tunnel, coming out to view the planes before going back into tunnel for Woolwich. I read somewhere that a station might be proposed for London City Airport, at least a couple of years back.

The simple answer to the first part is that the alignment already exists and its cheaper to run on the surface than in tunnel when you don't need to.
The airport would certainly like a Crossrail station (understandably), and building one has certainly been proposed. It wont be built at the same time as the line, that's for certain, but what the state of play is beyond that I don't know.

From some visits to the are it seems as if there is a high point in the developing trackbed where it is noticeably above the adjacent (Connaught Rd /Factory Rd) levels. This might just be the natural profile between the tunnels, but I did wonder whether there was some underground infrastructure which it was cheaper to bridge than divert. No clear pics to illustrate this, but www.flickr.com/photos/unravelled/7881101674/is in the area. More pics tagged "crossrail works" nearby in stream. Dave

My guess would be drainage rather than bridging utilities, but I'm really no expert! I'm not back in London until tomorrow, but I'll have a look next time I'm that way.

I revisited the area last week, and the high spot seems to be about half a metre above road level, and approximately level with the East end of the Tate and Lyle factory buildings. The barrels at the left are about at road level. Dave Edit by Londonstuff to change the linked image to no more than 800 pixels wide.
