Can anyone settle a tiny thing that is nagging at me? Do digital numerical displays in Europe (such as station clocks) show the number 7 with a crossbar? I can't remember seeing it, and perhaps such displays are manufactured mainly in countries, such as the USA and Japan, that don't have the crossbar.

The stroke is used for handwritten 7s to distinguish them from 1s.

The stroke is used for handwritten 7s to distinguish them from 1s. Absolutely right. And it's particularly pertinent in Germany where the 1 is always written with a serif which, when hand written, can be very long.

Ohmslaw - you are correct, of course - we get a lot of parts shipped from Germany (our company HQ is there) and lots of handwritten numbers include 1s with leading serifs the reach almost to the base line (like a very tight upside-down V). Hence all the handwritten 7s do have the crossbars.
When I was a computer programmer in a previous life, we always put a crossbar through 7s, and Zs and a slash through the 0s (zeroes).

I always put bars on 7s and strokes through 0s, but that's because my handwriting is appalling!

For many years I have always written 1 with a serif, 7 with a bar and 0 with a slash especially on official paperwork where any confusion can cause real headaches if what is written is misread. I've never used a bar with Z though as it is distinctly different from 2 in my hand.
