The Guardian is wrong. There was a tour from Stanmore to NX gate via baker street in I think 1961 (I was on it) using the tank outwards and elec: loco back to baker st: Also Istr a brake-van tour through edgeware rd ; in the late '50s or so.

.. and there were a few clips on the local London BBC news at lunchtime - probably repeated tonight at 18.30. Unfortunately, the sound of 1 departing was masked by the voiceover and the interior of 392 included Peter Hendy looking somewhat fey (Fay, even...) but otherwise quite nice.

With not much smoke evident on this test, did they use a special type of coal, or coke? I recall reading somewhere that coke was used on the Metropolitan (or District?) in the past.

Surprisingly little smoke evident, especially with Durham coal unavailable. Plenty of steam being blown off, though.
As far as I know, no attempt was made to link the safety valves to the condensing apparatus. Drivers simply learned from experience to keep them shut. This wasn't a difficult task under the gruelling schedules of the Inner Circle, where keeping steam up took considerably more effort than avoiding blowing it off.

Are Guardian journalists/editors reading the forum... ;D ;D ;D An ammendment correcting the initial erroneous statement was made on 17 December... Since the correction was word for word what I emailed to their corrections editor, I think I can offer an alternative explanation............
