Noticed an old fashioned type notice at the side of the tunnel entrance at Mile End tonight that lit up with 'District Approaching' on it (Westbound Central Line platform).
Any ideas why this is there? Never noticed it before now...

I believe it's to tell drivers to wait in the platform even if they have a green aspect to allow cross-platform connections between the Central and District.
Whether it's still used or is in use in other locations (Baron's Court springs to mind as a place it would be useful), I know not.

It no longer works at Mile End.
There has never been one at Barons Court.
The has been long discussion on this Forum of the similar installation at Finchley Road.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that there had ever been one at Barons Court, I just implied that it might not be a bad location for one.

It appeared to be working last night at Mile End, otherwise I'd never have spotted it

If it is there on the west bound District Line it is either not working, or is being ignored. Too many times I have been on an arriving Central Line train and the District drives off just as our doors open.
My guess in these days when performance points are awarded a wait of a 15 seconds could lose the whole line its bonus or whatever.

It was only ever really used on off peak times, in the days when off peak frequencies were lower than today. Back then, holding the Central line for the approaching District train saved passengers from a 5 min wait. Nowadays, the off peak service is so frequent that it is no longer necessary to maintain connections.

There is nothing on the District side to warn drivers of approching Central line trains

Finchley Road and Wembley Park both have an illuminated 'J' and 'M' for cross platform interchange on both lines respectively.

Most times District, H&C drivers wait for CL EB trains. Central has no obligation to wait due to service frequency, they have to maintain regularity because the signalling system limitations would delay the train behind and the one behind that. That's just my two pennies on it.

That's just my two pennies on it. Yes, in normal service, Central line trains run at full line speed for any given location, so unlike non ATO lines, they can't run a bit faster to make up any lost time.

The reason why this was put in was because on the eastbound a driver on a 92 can only see the platform edge through the monitors when stopped and as the District stopped a car short can't even be seen from the cab door window. There was many complaints of drivers closing and moving off even when a District had stopped. I was one of the drivers questioned about this at the time and I suggested some form of illumination as what was at Wembley Park and Finchley Road on the Met and Jubilee lines.
